Geometric Road Design with AutoCAD Civil 3D

This study evaluates the use of AutoCAD Civil 3D for designing the geometry of single and dual carriageway roads at Lagos State University of Science and Technology, focusing on alignment, sight distance, and cross-section details. The design includes four circular curves, crest and sag curves for vertical alignment, and drainage solutions, all adhering to Nigerian highway design standards. The project utilized total station surveys to import ground coordinates into the software for accurate road alignment and cross-sectional modeling.

ABSTRACT

This study tested capability of AutoCAD Civil 3D to design geometric of a single and dual
carriageway road at Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH),
ikorodu area of Lagos State.
The geometric design manages the dimensions and layout of visible features of the road such
as alignment, sight distance cross-section and intersections. It is a combination of cross-
sectional elements, horizontal alignments, sight distance and vertical alignment details. The
total station was used to carryout the survey of the proposed route from the third gate to staff
quarters building (road 1,) and Activity junction to staff quarters junction (road 2). The total
length of the roads was 1.16km. Total station is a nifty for importing the points in AutoCAD
civil 3D which is in the form of x, y, z co-ordinates that is northing, easting and elevation.
These co-ordinates of the ground will generate and helps to design the alignment in the
AutoCAD civil 3D software. The data obtained from the survey was imported into the civil
3D software.
Four simple circular curves of 100.000m, 300.000m, 120.000m, and 200.000m respectively
was designed at chainages CH.0+147.73 – CH.0+296.95, CH.0+441.15 – CH.0+510.27
with three tangents for Road 1 while CH.0+04.21 – CH.0+031.65, CH.0+120.65 –
CH.0+201.91, CH.0+278.32 – CH.0+298.32, CH.0+394.50 – CH.0+419.64 with four
tangents for Road 2. Two crest curves and two sag curves were designed for vertical
alignments. The minimum safe radius for design speed of 50km/h is 86m (Federal Ministry of
Work Highway Manual “Geometric Design”, Part 1, Vol.1,2013, Table 4.3) whereas the
minimum standard K values for crest vertical curve and sag vertical curve are 7 and 13
respectively (Federal Ministry of Work Highway Manual “Geometric Design”, Part 1,
Vol.1,2013, Table,4.5) and the K values for research are 36.124, 13.935, 11.884, and
131.1519. Proposed 1.5m x 1.5m double cells culvert was provided at the lowest point of
CH.446.75 to discharge storm water, also a rectangular channel drain of 1.0m deep and
0.9m wide was provided.
The horizontal alignment, vertical alignment, setting out details, earthwork computation and
cross-sectional view of designed road at 25m intervals was obtained using AutoCAD Civil
3D. In our design, the cross section(modelling) at particular intervals shows lanes,
shoulders, drain, median, daylight slope and pavement layers. A cross slope or camber of
2.5% was provided as stated in design standard requirement. Shoulder slope is given as
3.0% and the daylight slope is 50%.
The geometry of the road was intended in accordance with the Nigeria Ministry of Works
Highway Manual “Geometric Design”, Part 1, Vol.1,2013. which satisfy the standard
requirement for both vertical and horizontal alignment.
