Functions
of
Counselor
1. Counseling
The primary role of a counselor
is to help clients with their growth,
adjustment, problem-solving,
and decision-making, either
individually or in group settings.
2. Assessment
Counselors systematically
gather and interpret information
about clients, using tools like
standardized tests (e.g.,
personality
tests, IQ tests, career inventory
tests) and non-test data
(e.g., observation, case studies).
3. Career Assistance
A unique function of counselors is to help clients
explore and determine the best-suited career options
for them, through comprehensive career development
programs and education.
4. Placement and
Follow-Up
After helping clients make
decisions or changes,
counselors continue to
support
and check in on them to ensure
they are adjusting well and
meeting their goals.
5. Referral
When clients need specialized help
beyond the counselor's expertise,
counselors facilitate connections to
other experts or counselors.
6. Consultation
Counselors collaborate with third parties, such
as the client's significant others, to address
the client's needs and difficulties.
7. Research
Counselors have an important role in
conducting research to generate data that
can contribute to the advancement of the
counseling profession.
8. Evaluation and
Accountability
Counselors must consistently
evaluate the effectiveness of their guidance
and counseling programs, assessing the
activities, interventions, and the efficiency
of the personnel involved. They are
also accountable for their services.
9. Prevention
Beyond treating existing issues, counseling also
has a preventative dimension. Counselors aim to
prevent problems by empowering individuals with
knowledge and promoting healthy attitudes and
habits, and by detecting early signs of issues.
