Risk assessment task

Aims
This is a progress task sheet. You need to work through the task sheet, using
your risk assessment skills. There are two parts to the task on this sheet. Try
both, and see how far you get.

Progress table
Here is a progress table for the task. Once you have finished the task, look
through the table and tick the boxes you think you have done correctly.

Progress stage I have . . .

Developing (Level 3)  identified obvious risks in the picture.

Developing (Level 4)  described who may be at risk in the

picture.
Secure (Level 5)  suggested improvements that could be
made in the laboratory in the picture.
Secure (Level 6)  identified problems in the picture that
may mean the distillation won’t work
properly.
Extending (Level 7)  listed improvements to the apparatus in
the picture
 explained why these improvements will
improve the distillation.

The task
You work as a scientific advisor for a distillation company that distils water from
seawater. It is your job to check that staff are working safely and carrying out
procedures effectively. You have been to one of your company’s laboratories, and
what you saw is shown in the picture on the Information sheet. You will need to
write a report about the issues you have identified.

Part 1

 Write a list of the safety risks you have identified in the picture.

 For each risk you have listed, write down why it is a risk and who it could affect.

Part 2

 For all the risks you identified in Part 1, write down how the hazards can be improved or
overcome.
Look at the distillation apparatus in the picture.

 Make a list of the problems you spot with the apparatus being used for the distillation.

 Write an explanation for why each problem you have identified may mean that the
distillation will not work properly.
 Write down how these problems can be overcome or improved.
