GCSE Computer Systems Explained

Introduction

This guide covers key components of computer systems for the Edexcel GCSE Computer Science course.

1. Hardware and Software

Hardware: The physical components of a computer system such as CPU, RAM, motherboard, and

input/output devices.

Software: Programs and operating systems that control the hardware and allow tasks to be performed.

2. Operating Systems

The OS manages hardware and software resources, provides a user interface, manages files, and runs

applications.

Examples: Windows, macOS, Linux.

3. Storage Devices

Primary: RAM (volatile) and ROM (non-volatile).

Secondary: HDD (magnetic), SSD (flash), Optical Discs (CD/DVD).

Comparison: SSDs are faster, more durable but more expensive than HDDs.

4. Utility Software

Includes antivirus, file compression, backup software, and disk management tools.
