Welcome Back!
I hope you are enjoying the mild winter weather. Many of you have already moved into the new building and a few are waiting to move in. From DoITs perspective the move has gone very smoothly with more than 400 people relocated since last October. We have provided new computers and phones to all. Comprised of a new datacenter, wireless network, and phone system, our state-of-the-art technology infrastructure supports our classrooms, computer labs, and student lounges, making John Jay the envy of other CUNY campuses. There is still more to come. You can find a wealth of information on the new building by visiting [Link]

Moving Into the New Building

Over the past six months DoIT has undertaken the challenging task of transferring all Computer/IT services in NH, BMW, 54th St. Annex, Westport and Haaren Hall to the New Building. Because of the breadth and scope of this task, DoIT has accomplished this task in phases, with the first phase having been the most challenging. This phase involved the creation of an entirely new data center. Upon completion, DoIT relocated more than 90 servers housed in the antiquated data center in North Hall. The major challenge was to successfully complete this move without any interruption of services, as any interruption would not only affect those who would soon be moving, but could also cause downtime of critical services such as email and Internet connectivity. These are the mission critical services upon which the entire John Jay Community relies. DoIT also worked diligently over the course of three weekends in October 2011 and January 2012 to ensure that those who were moving to the New Building experienced a transition that was as seamless as possible. Successful implementation of the relocation required a number of steps. Initially, we received a list of all users moving to the New Building. Next, we designated which computers were to be replaced. During the move, DoIT staff was on site from Friday to Sunday. We successfully installed and configured approximately 620 new VoIP (Voice over IP) phones. We have also have installed 480 lab computers, over 50 classroom computers, and replaced or allocated 250 new Faculty and Staff computers in addition to reconnecting and reconfiguring all other existing computers. We look forward to being able to replicate the success we have had during the upcoming Spring Break move.

Staff Profiles

Zenobia Peterson

Ariel Sanchez
riel began working at John Jay in 2004. Currently, his position is IT Assistant/Tech Support. In this position, he visits faculty and staff offices to fix software, hardware and solve virus problems as well as provide new computer replacements. His career at John Jay began as an intern in ITSS as a Lab Technician while attending LaGuardia Community College. The staff there was so impressed that Ariel was hired upon graduation as a HelpDesk Support Technician. His interests outside of John Jay include playing piano and listening to jazz, show tunes, the blues, and big band records and live performances. He plays in his churchs band along with one of his three brothers. The Jazz-Fusion group Snarky Puppy is one of Ariels alltime favorites. This native New Yorker and Manhattan resident is also an ardent football and basketball fan and plays basketball in his spare time. He concedes that his most marked characteristic is his dry sense of humor. His favorite book is the Bible and his favorite source of technology news is reading the blogs, especially ones about gadgets. The thing that he most appreciates about computer systems is that they are constantly changing and never stagnant. Ariel recommends that anyone who is interested in the field of computer technology get as much hands-on experience and take as many internships as possible. He is currently working on completing his Master of Public Administration Degree at John Jay. Access System. The Student Online Elections System was rolled out for the spring 2012 student elections and it was a huge success. Students quickly adopted the new process. 1490 students voted online this year, whereas last year 1455 students voted using the mechanical voting stations. This system also saved the college approximately $10,000 for the rental of the voting machines. The SIMS/ SALI Access Request form is a digitized version of the paper form used to request an account for SIMS and/or SALI. This form includes the logical algorithms to assign unique/never used account names to new users and keeps track of all accounts, making the entire process secure and user friendly for the Registrars office.

enobia Petersen began her career at John Jay College eight years ago as a College Assistant and three years prior to that she worked as a Federal Work Study student in the ITSS Computer Lab in North Hall. Subsequently, she was hired part time as a Laptop Loan Coordinator and computer technician. Her current position is ITSS Classroom Technology Services (CTS) Coordinator and supervisor of the daytime technicians. In a typical day, Zenobia and her team respond to work orders, hardware and software requests, set up computers and repair classroom equipment.

t has certainly been an exciting time with the launch of John Jays new building. From the cascade filled with students to the soon to be opened outdoor park space this location has truly transformed the John Jay College experience. As John Jay seeks to expand our distance learning initiatives and extend the reach of our institution, the Department of Information Technology (DoIT) is working to ensure that our on campus experience is accessible to the extended members of our community. As such, in concert with other campus groups DoIT will be launching a virtual walking tour of the John Jay Campus soon. Through technology, this tour will allow individuals anywhere with an internet connection to virtually walk the campus and experience 360 degree panoramic views of the physical spaces that make John Jay so great. A partial list of these locations includes the gymnasium, tennis courts, outdoor rooftop park, Theater, Jay Express and 250 Seat lecture hall. Watch your email for an announcement of this exciting new service in the coming weeks.

Aligning Technology with John Jay s Mission

The New Building gave us the opportunity to enhance our network infrastructure to become more robust. While a robust network infrastructure may be transparent to most users, it is the essential foundation for the distribution of valuable applications and services to faculty, staff and students. DoIT is committed to creating the best technological tools for our college community, effectively, aligning technology with the colleges mission. Excerpts from the colleges mission statement: It [John Jay College] strives to endow students with the skills of critical thinking and effective communication ability to acquire and evaluate information the ability to navigate advanced technological systems It serves the community by developing graduates who have the intellectual acuity, moral commitment and professional competence to confront the challenges of crime, justice and public safety in a free society. The Evidence We have seen 400-500% increase in student daily logins (over 2100) on the wireless network. Faculty and staff are very receptive to our new Cisco telephone system. DoITs leadership chose this particular telephone system based on return on investment (ROI), cost of ownership (Cost of ownership), and other technical and business reasons. This makes sense. Even so, what made us most proud is when our user community gave the following feedback: It is so much easier to manage my voicemails. The voice clarity on these new phones are impressive They [phones] really look nice [I] Love the convenience of having a copy of voicemail in my email inbox Caller ID, call waiting and call conferencing, yeah!!! Wow, I can lookup someone in the directory right from the phone! This new telephone system offers such feature as: Extension mobility Call waiting of up to 8 (no rollover) lines Music on Hold (automatic) Missed call, placed call or received call in the Directory Window More than one phone could share the same prime line. On an individual basis, ring time can be extended before going to voicemail. XML Applications: Information such as weather, the College's calendar, contacts, news, etc., can be provided on your phone 's interface. It is our goal to find the best technical solutions for your needs. As such, DoIT will continue to ask the college community the same question that we have been asking since 2006; How can we empower you?
