Skit Script

Narrator: Good Morning Everyone, I am Maziha Fareen, from IBDP 1. I

will be your narrator for today. The skit we are here to perform is based on
the theme of National Girl Child Day. We strive to give you a depiction of
the life of a girl, a woman in the 21st century in Indian culture.

Our country has evolved through challenges resiliently and overthrown

any corruption or societal ill. It has come to be a just, ethical, diverse
nation. One we are all proud to be citizens of. India worships the women
of our country and celebrates femininity. However we have not fully
grown out of prejudices, gender stereotypes and crime against women.
Some instances are so heartbreaking and unjustified yet they go unseen
and neglected.

Thus, today we would like to present a skit that shines light on the
adversaries of a woman since birth. We have an interesting presentation
though, we will be doing an Expectations vs Reality for each scenario to
show how an ideal world would nurture a girl against how the situation
actually is today. Every scene will start with expectations and then reality
will be shown. Without further ado, let’s begin!

Scene 1:​
(Characters: Mother - Joshika, father - Siddhita, aunt -
Joshini, grandma - Raina, doctor - Kautilya)

Expectations:

(Enters the doctor holding a baby girl)

Narrator: The Scene is set in a hospital where a baby girl is born.

Expectations.
Doctor: Congratulations!!! You’ve been blessed with an amazing baby
girl.

(Father takes the baby to his hands)

Father: Oh really, is it true? I have a beautiful daughter.

Grandma: Yes, son. What a great thing it is to have a goddess-like

daughter entering our family.

Aunt: My baby niece, you are adorable. I'm going to spoil you with all my
love and gifts.

Father: She is my little lioness, brave and courageous. I'm going to make
all her wishes come true.

Mother: We are the luckiest people on Earth!! Welcome to the family my

angel.

(Everyone’s really happy and excited about their new member)

Narrator: The family is rejoicing and celebrating the birth of the couple’s
beautiful daughter. Now let’s take a look at the reality of the same
scenario.

Reality:

(Enters the doctor holding a baby girl)

Doctor: Congratulations!!! You’ve been blessed with an amazing baby

girl.
(Relatives start whispering outside the hospital room)

Aunt: Oh no it's a girl? What will they do now, mom?

Grandma: Yes. How unfortunate are we to not have a son? Now who will
take our generation forward?

Aunt: Yes, mom. Maybe they should have had a son.

Grandma: They have to spend a lot on her education and marriage.

(The parents hear the relatives’ comments and express their grief for
having a daughter.)

Narrator: The couple is upset under the influence of their family and
relatives. Here's a look into their conversation.

Father: My dear, what do you think? Everyone is unhappy with her.

Mother: We can’t do anything about it right now, it’s our fate. I’m sorry for
not being able to give a son.

Father: Yes, darling. Maybe you’re correct. Please don't take me the wrong
way but only a son can fulfill my dreams.

Mother: The only thing we can do is to educate her. But I fear she is not
safe in this world.

Grandma: I think you can marry her off as soon as she is done with her
studies. Anyway, she can’t be the breadwinner of our family.

Narrator: See how devastated the family looks when the daughter is born.
They would much rather prefer the birth of a boy over a girl. The daughter
is raised by the couple and they also have a son. Both the children have
grown and are studying in school. The kids share their accomplishments
with their parents. Take a look at the conversation. Expectations.

Scene 2:
(Characters: Mother - Joshika, father - Siddhita, Daughter-
Alya, younger brother - Kautilya)

Expectations:

(Mother and father enter into the kids' room)

Father: Hello kids, how are you both?

Daughter: I am doing wonderful dad, I am elected as the president of the

student council in our school.

Father: I'm so happy for you, my dear. You are going to achieve great
things in life and make your mother and I proud.

Mother: I'm proud of you, my brilliant daughter, success awaits you.

Father: And you, my son? How are you?

Son: I'm doing well dad, I'm elected as the vice president of the student
council.

Mother: That's great news, son. I knew both of you were going to be our
pride.

Father: By the way, my children, what have you thought about your
career?

Daughter: I want to work in finance and complete my studies here in India.

Father: What a great thing that is, my dear. Do what your heart desires.

Mother: And you, my son? What would you like to pursue?

Son: Mom I want to be a chef, and go to a culinary school.

Father: That’s wonderful, children. May our blessings be with you both.

(Everyone hug and celebrate!)

Narrator: The family is happy with their children’s achievements. Both the
daughter and the son are congratulated equally and no distinction can be
noticed. Let’s take a look at how this situation would be in reality.

Reality:

Father: Hello my son, how are you doing today?

Daughter: Hi dad!!

Father: I'm talking to your brother, what have we talked about interfering
when 2 people are talking?

Daughter: I'm sorry, father.

Son: Hi father, I'm quite alright. I'm so glad to share that I have been
elected as the vice president of The student council in our school.

Father: That's amazing news, son. You make me so proud.

Mother: Congratulations, my dear. You will find great success in life.

Son: Thank you mom and dad. Alya has also been elected as the president
of the student council as well.
(Daughter smiles at her parents)

Daughter: Yes mom and dad.

Son: She worked really hard for it too.

Mom: Good job Alya.

Father: Yeah, well done.

Narrator: Alya’s parents are not as excited about her accomplishments as

they are of their son.

Daughter: Mom, Dad, are you both not happy with me? Did I do
something wrong?

Father: No my child, we're happy.

Mother: It's just that, you can achieve all you want now, but later only our
son will be able to make us proud.

Father: He is learning all these skills for his life ahead, you don't need that.

Mother: A girl is always dependent on a man. Right now it's your father,
later your husband.

Daughter: But mom, I really want to become a businesswoman in India.

Mother: Oh my god, how can you think that. It’s better if you complete
your education quickly and get married.

Father: Alya, it will be time soon when you will simply be a housewife,
taking care of your family. So, there’s no point in talking about your
career..
Daughter: But dad. I really want to. I'm also capable of those things too.
Of being independent and becoming successful.

Mother: Don't argue with your dad, Alya. We’re not discussing it again.

Father: By the way, my son, what have you thought about your career?

Son: Well dad, I would like to study culinary at a University in India, just
like Alya. We both want to progress our nation.

Mother: Not at all my son. There’s a complete world of opportunities open

for you out there but Alya is destined to work inside a house and take care
of her family. She is a girl.

Father: Yes, of course, son. You’ll surely study abroad to grow, earn and
become successful.

(Everyone hugs, while the daughter stands away looking at them.)

Narrator: Alya is devastated. She is saddened by her parents compelling

her into choosing a future and not being able to be what she dreamed of.
The couple expects only from their son. This is a display of gender
stereotypes that still exists today. Now, let’s look at another case. The
scene takes place on the streets. Alya is a grown woman now. She makes
her dreams come true by working in a Multinational Company. One day, as
she is going back home, she is faced with a robber outside her office. Take
a look at how the events unfold. Expectation.

Scene 3:
(Characters - Alya, robber- Siddhita, his partner- Raina, a
man- Kautilya, a woman- Joshini)

Expectation:
(Alya leaves her office at regular time (6 pm))

Alya: It's 6 pm, I better get home quick and spend time with my lovely
family.

Narrator: 2 thieves follow Alya trying to find an opportunity to rob her.

(Alya encounters two men dressed in black clothes, following her.)

Alya: Oh no, they are trying to rob me. I better prepare myself by calling
the police.

(Alya pulls out her phone from her bag and begins dialling. The thieves
walk in front of her and get hold of her bag.)

Narrator: Alya pulls out her phone from her bag and begins dialling. The

(A man steps in and the robbers pull away.)

Narrator: And suddenly a random woman walks to her and defends Alya.
A man notices the same and helps them.

Woman: Why are you bothering the innocent lady? Leave her alone.

Man: Yeah, quit your robbing crimes. Leave the innocent alone, or I'll call
the police now.

(the thieves run away)

Narrator: The man and woman help Alya chase the thieves away. They
check on her for any robberies or harm.

Man: Miss, are you okay?

Woman: Are you hurt? Did they rob anything?

Alya: Thank you, I’m alright. No, I wasn't robbed. I don’t know what
would have happened to me if you both wouldn’t have been there. I
thought he would steal my bag and leave me defenseless.

Man: It's the duty of every human being to help another in danger.

Woman: Indeed, no matter who it is, a child, a senior, a man or a woman,

all of us must make each other feel safe.

Alya: I agree! Thank you both for helping me. And along the way I have
also made some friends :)

(Everyone begins the chatter. Alya walks home safely.)

Narrator: Alya and both of them chatter for sometime. Later, she goes back
home to her family safe and sound. If the same situation were to happen in
real life. Here’s what it would look like. Reality.

Reality:

Alya: It's 6 pm. I better get home quickly and spend time with my family.

(Alya encounters the thief following her)

Narrator: the thieves follow Alya trying to rob her.

(The thief continues to follow Alya)

(Alya pulls out her phone from her bag and begins dialling.)

Narrator: In an act of defense, Alya pulls out her phone to dial the police.
But in the attempt the robber steps in her way
Alya: I better call the police before he robs me. (aside)

(A man steps in front of her.)

Narrator: The robbers step in Alya’s way so she changes her route. But
there, she spots another man.

Alya: Oh no, there's a stranger here, too. He seems harmless But I could
never guess his intentions.

(Alya walks uncomfortably when the second man also follows her.)

Narrator: Alya walks uncomfortably when the second man also follows
her. There’s a bystander woman who doesn't put in effort to try to save
Alya. She is at the risk of the same danger so she can only pity Alya.

Woman: [aside] How unfortunate, that poor woman is threatened. I can

only hope she gets home safe.

Alya: Runs to her house and gets in.

(Alya walks to the front)

Alya: Is it the fault of the woman that a stranger makes her feel unsafe?
Isn't it unfair to feel threatened by people of my own kind?

(Exeunt characters.)
