Title: Integration of Competency-Based Education (CBE) Skills in English Language Teaching

in Secondary Schools: A Case of Bureti Sub-County, Kericho County, Kenya

The recent shift of the Kenyan educational system from the competent-based system to

Competency-Based Education, CBE, has led to significant transformations in all the learning

areas. English Language Teaching, ELT, plays an especially important role in the development

of key competencies such as communication, critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and

digital literacy. This study will examine how CBE skills are being integrated into English

language instruction in secondary schools within Bureti sub-county, Kericho county.

Specifically, this research will focus on the assessment of the teachers’ understanding of

CBE, the pedagogical strategies employed to integrate the core competencies and the challenges

that are experienced in the implementation stage. Also, the study will investigate the availability

of instructional resources, and the institutional support provided for effective CBE integration in

English classes. A mixed-method approach will be used, whereby the qualitative data collected

from the teachers through interviews and classroom observations will be combined with the

quantitative data from the questionnaires filled by the students and the surveys that the teachers

will undertake.

The findings achieved will provide valuable insights on how stakeholders such as

curriculum developers, teacher trainers and school administrators can identify gaps in the current

approaches and propose actionable steps for the effective implementation of CBE skills in

English language teaching. Furthermore, this study will actively contribute to the growing body

of knowledge on educational reforms and the achievement of 21 st Century skill development in

the contexts of Kericho County and Kenya as a whole.

Ultimately, this research seeks to support the realization of Kenya’s CBC and CBE goals

through the promotion of effective, competency-based English language instruction that will play

a direct role in equipping the learners with the relevant skills for lifelong learning, increased

employability and in becoming global citizens.
