Tutorial 1 – The Number system and basic operations with whole numbers

1. Determine the solutions to the following without using a calculator (show all
steps).
a) There are 1053 women and829 men employed at a factory.
How many employees are there in total?
b) On the morning of her birthday, a teenager received some money from
her friends and family.
She received R350 from her parents, R30 from each of her 3 friends
and R45 from her brother. She spent R55 at the cafeteria at lunchtime
and in the evening her grandparents gave her R200 as a present.
How much money did she have left at the end of her birthday?
c) There are 115 passengers in a bus. At a bus stop 23 passengers got
off the bus while 17 passengers got on. How many passengers were
in the bus after the stop?

2. Determine the thermometer reading if the temperature:

4. Determine, showing all calculations, what Nosipho’s bank balance will
be after a month if the following transactions appeared on her bank
statement:

• Her father deposited R900 for her allowance.


• She withdrew R250 for food. .
• Later in the month she withdrew R450 to use on a weekend trip to see her
friend, R160 for her cell-phone and an amount of R410for books.
• The monthly bank charges for her account are R40.
• She deposited R550 into her account from a book that she sold second
hand.

(a) If the temperature at midday is 150 C and drops to 50C at night by how
much has it changed that day?
(b) If the winter midday temperature of Cradock is 100C and the temperature
drops by 120, what will the lowest temperature be?
(c) The coldest hour of the day is an hour before sunrise and in the winter
months this is at 4am for the month of June in Grahamstown. What will
the temperature be when the students go to class at 8 o' clock if the
temperature climbed by 20 C per hour and the night time low was –70C?

6. Without using a calculator simplify the following:

a) 234 × 11 b) 1234 × 19 c) 328 × 99
