Objective

The objective of this project is to understand the significance of consumer rights and how they

protect buyers from exploitation. It aims to educate students about the legal provisions available

under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, and promote awareness regarding the rights and

responsibilities of consumers in daily life.

Introduction

Consumers play a vital role in the economy. Every individual is a consumer in one way or another.

However, consumers are often exploited due to unfair trade practices. The concept of consumer

rights emerged to ensure that buyers are treated fairly. In India, consumer protection laws give legal

power to individuals to raise their voices against exploitation.

What are Consumer Rights?

Consumer rights refer to a set of rights every buyer is entitled to. These include:

1. Right to Safety

2. Right to be Informed

3. Right to Choose

4. Right to be Heard

5. Right to Seek Redressal

6. Right to Consumer Education

These rights aim to promote and protect the interest of consumers.

Importance of Consumer Rights

Consumer rights ensure fair treatment, safety, and accurate information in the marketplace. They

help prevent exploitation such as overpricing, defective goods, false advertising, and poor service.

Aware consumers can make informed choices, and in case of issues, they can seek legal redress

through consumer courts.

The Consumer Protection Act, 2019

The Consumer Protection Act, 2019 replaced the earlier 1986 Act. It established consumer courts at

the district, state, and national levels. It allows filing complaints online and introduced concepts like

product liability, e-commerce rules, and penalties for misleading advertisements. This act is a major

step in safeguarding consumer interests.

Forms of Consumer Exploitation

Some common forms of exploitation are:

- Selling defective or expired goods

- Charging more than the MRP

- False claims or advertisements

- Adulteration and hoarding

These practices not only harm consumers financially but can also affect health and safety.
How to File a Complaint?

To file a complaint, consumers must collect proof like bills or warranties and lodge the complaint in

the appropriate consumer forum. The complaint can be filed online via [Link] The

process is simple and helps consumers seek compensation or replacement.

Responsibilities of Consumers

Just as consumers have rights, they also have responsibilities:

- Be aware of products and services

- Read labels carefully

- Ask for a bill

- Avoid wasting resources

- Report unethical practices

Responsible consumers help build a fair marketplace for everyone.

Role of Consumer Awareness Campaigns

Campaigns like "Jago Grahak Jago" play a vital role in educating people about their rights.

Advertisements, social media, and school programs help spread awareness. Educated consumers

are empowered and more likely to challenge unfair practices.

Conclusion

Consumer rights are essential for the protection and well-being of buyers. Awareness and legal

knowledge help in preventing exploitation. As responsible citizens, we must know our rights, fulfill

our duties, and encourage others to do the same for a just and informed society.
