ABSTRACT

The rise of social media has drastically altered marketing approaches and consumer behavior,
especially among Millennials and Generation Z. This research investigates the impact of social media
influencers on buying intentions within these age groups, concentrating on users at Koforidua
Technical University. The study seeks to evaluate how certain characteristics of influencers—such as
trustworthiness, authenticity, content quality, and attractiveness—influence consumer choices in the
online landscape.

The findings suggested that the most important factor affecting purchase intentions is
trustworthiness, followed closely by authenticity, content quality, and attractiveness. Participants
showed a strong inclination towards influencers who are viewed as honest, reliable, and transparent.
Authenticity became a vital factor for trust and engagement, especially when influencers share their
personal experiences or personally use the products they promote. The quality of content,
particularly regarding in-depth reviews and visually appealing formats, also had a positive impact on
buying choices. Although attractiveness was considered, it ranked the lowest among the four
characteristics, indicating that relational and credibility-based qualities have a greater influence than
physical appearance.

The results highlighted the important role of influencer marketing in influencing consumer behavior
and offer practical recommendations for marketers looking to boost engagement and conversions
within digitally engaged consumer groups. Additionally, this research adds to the current literature by
delivering empirical data on how influencer characteristics impact purchase intentions within the
context of Ghana
CHAPTER ONE - INTRODUCTION

1.1 Introduction of the study

In the last couple of years, social media has transformed quickly how individuals communicate, share
information, and make buying decisions. Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and Facebook have emerged as
powerful marketing tools connecting brands and consumers directly reducing the gap. One of the
most important trends to emerge from this digital revolution is the explosion of social media
influencers—individuals who command a large base of followers and who possess the ability to
influence the ideas and consumer patterns of those who are following them. As compared to all
other traditional forms of advertising, influencer marketing is based on interpersonal relationships,
authenticity, trust, and relatability and hence is extremely effective among youth. Millennials, born
from 1981 to 1996, and Generation Z, born after 1997, are the most active users of social media, and
they prefer peer-like recommendations above traditional celebrity endorsements or brand-oriented
content.

Research indicates that influencer marketing has a significant influence on consumers' attitudes
toward brands, product judgment, and purchasing decisions. Influencers not only serve as endorsers
of products but also as opinion leaders who shape consumers' attitudes through their posts, lifestyle,
and perceived credibility. Thus, it is crucial to determine how influencer characteristics translates to
purchase behaviour or decisions.

1.2 Background of the study

In this era of intense technology dependence, social media plays a big role in our daily life. In
addition to being a place for entertainment and networking, it is a vital venue for product launches
and marketing efforts that leverage well-known influencers who have a big say in what millennials
and Gen Zer’s buy. Social media is increasingly more than just a platform for pleasure due to
digitization. A vast number of people use it to stream items, and digital influencers use their
marketing techniques to draw viewers in and convince them to buy products. As a result, the
marketing industry has seen a seismic upheaval in recent years, with influencer marketing becoming
increasingly prevalent in influencing customer attitudes. In essence, influencer marketing is a
strategic alliance that benefits both parties and is formed by people who have established a
significant level of trust and reputation in their respective fields, usually through social media.
Celebrities, industry experts, micro and nano-influencers, and others are referred to as influencers,
and they use their fan base to market goods and services. The high perceived naturalness and
credibility of influencers, who produce content that speaks to and connects with an audience, are
key factors in the success of influencer marketing. The study of people or groups and how they
choose, purchase, use, and discard products, services, or experiences is known as consumer
behavior, and it has changed significantly throughout time. This shift is strongly related to the rise
and expansion of influencer marketing, a type of advertising where companies use people with
sizable internet followings to advertise their goods. Celebrity endorsements in the media are the
origin of influencer marketing. But the concept of fame has also changed throughout time, and now
anyone with a sizable online community following can be considered a celebrity. Because they grew
up in the digital age, this generation is greatly impacted by the people they like and the content they
find online. Influencer marketing is a useful strategy for influencing Gen Z's purchase decisions since,
in contrast to previous generations, they are more likely to believe what influencers say than to
believe traditional advertising.
Yet, the dynamics of influencer marketing and consumer behavior are complex and rely on a variety
of factors, including the influencer's popularity, authenticity, trustworthiness, and content quality.
Additionally, consumers have grown up in an era of information overload, where options and
knowledge are readily available to them. Their expectations and needs as consumers have changed
as a result of this digital empowerment. They want streamlined, customized experiences on all
platforms, including social media, physical stores, and internet. Their purchasing decisions are now
mostly influenced by social media, authenticity, and convenience. The main focus of the study is how
influencers persuade Gen Z and Millennials to purchase things by using their influencing style.
Previous studies have been conducted to have a better understanding of Gen Z and Millennial
purchasing behaviors because of the effect of influencers. However, the various factors/attributes
that influencers employ to have an effect on their purchase decisions are heavily involved in this
study (Campbell and Farrell, 2020). Research has shown that Instagram and Facebook influence
almost 72 percent of purchasing decisions Delbaere, Michael and Phillips, (2021). There have been
various surveys done and research data has been properly incorporated in this paper. It shows that in
the era of digitization; people tend to disbelieve advertisements or brands. People mostly trust their
colleague or someone who has used the new product. Digital influencer Ermiş, (2021). Influencers
can be a very powerful medium to act as a bridge between products and customers. It is most
preferred as it helps in target customer selection and increases customer acquisition rate Fondevila
Gascón et al., (2020). The greatest benefit of social media influencers is that they influence brand
awareness. Influencers help increase the brand followers across various social media sites.
Influencers have been used to create good customer relations and improve purchasing decisions
throughout history. The majority of customers buy commodities on the social media platform, which
allows them to use social media applications, leading people to buy a tremendous amount of beauty
and fashion, home appliances, etc. products on the online platform. According to Ghaphery (2021),
joining the social media platform is like a demographic issue; It was asked to ensure the age of
participants who voluntarily use social networks for the purpose of making purchases. This
relationship has shown that most young people are interested in social media marketing and buy
products from advertising on social websites. Related to the topic of the study are fully linked to the
parts of the literature review as well as to the objectives of the study, Archer, Wolf and Nalloor
(2021). It has been observed that there are numerous people on the digital platform buying products
in association to receive discounts and referral coupons from online sites.

1.3 Statement of the problem

Social media influencers (SMIs) in today's digital economy are of paramount significance as they
shape consumers' buying behavior through their online presence, credibility, and relationship with
their audience. As the effectiveness of traditional advertisement dwindles, businesses are
increasingly employing influencers to promote products and services (Lou & Yuan, 2020). However,
as influencer marketing on social media has entered the mainstream, how much it influences
consumer purchasing behavior is a top issue on the minds of marketers and firms. One of its central
problems is whether or not influencer marketing is indeed an actual driver of purchase behavior.
Consumers are bombarded by influencer posts all the time, but one does not know if this is
ultimately buying behavior in reality. Though some research shows that influencers have
considerable impact on consumers' attitudes and buying intentions, others find the influence to be
superficial and limited to brand awareness rather than conversions (Munnukka et al., 2020). In
addition, the level of trust and credibility a specific influencer commands in deciding his influence is
crucial because audiences may perceive some endorsements as fake or commercial (Schouten et al.,
2020).
In spite of enormous investments in influencer marketing, there is still an important knowledge gap
in understanding the processes through which influencers influence consumer behavior. In particular,
numerous brands use influencers to increase product visibility and believability, empirical research
confirming connections between influencer attributes—authenticity, trustworthiness, and
engagement—and actual purchase behaviors is scarce. This research aims to fill this gap by
examining the ways different social media influencer attributes drive consumer purchase decisions.
The research will examine factors like perceived credibility of the influencer, authenticity, quality of
content and how appealing they are, as well as demographic variation. The ultimate goal is to create
a comprehensive framework that explains the impact of social media influencers on consumer
buying behavior, thus providing actionable insights for marketers to make their online campaigns
more effective in a more competitive environment.

All though, influencer type and their relationship to those they follow can impact consumer behavior,
others such as influencer expertise and platform engagement are determinants that lead to various
levels of consumer persuasion (De Veirman et al., 2021). The aim of this research is to examine the
influence of social media influencers on consumer buying behavior through the identification of the
primary drivers of influence and measuring the success of influencer marketing based on product
categories. The findings will provide insights to brands, marketers, and businesses to further optimize
their influencer marketing campaigns and increase consumer engagement.

1.6 Significance of the study

The study is relevant because it concentrates on how social media influencers influence the
purchasing habits of consumers, especially Millennials and Generation Z. As the two generations
make up the most active social media users, having an understanding of how influencers impact their
purchasing choices will help companies and marketers in developing more effective digital marketing
techniques. These findings will determine what influencer qualities such as credibility, authenticity,
content quality, and attractiveness are salient in order to indicate why consumers adopt and plan on
purchasing. Moreover, this research will benefit social media influencers insofar as it will help them
to refine their brand and content approach to gaining people's trust and influence. The research will
similarly benefit consumers as it will expand their knowledge base regarding how influence
advertising affects purchasing decisions. Scholars and potential researchers can also look up to this
