ABSTRACT
PROJECT TITLE: PROPOSED SIX DOORS TOILET FOR THE KISUMU
NATIONAL POLYTECHNIC

REASONS FOR COMING UP WITH THE PROJECT.

The reason as to why I decided to come up with the project is because there is increased
population in the Kisumu National Polytechnic and there was need for additional toilet. It
was also from the ministry of health and National Environment Management Authority, due
to the Covid- 19 pandemics and also need for social distance. There is also malfunctioning of
sewer lines thus the rate of flow of waste is low. So we needed a modern toilet that will be
connected to main sewer line to improve on environmental hygiene within the are. Unlike the
current toilet which is connected to a septic tank.

PROBLEMS SOLVED BY THE PROJECT

Once the proposed project is commenced, there will be improvement in hygienic conditions
within the Kisumu National Polytechnic; it will reduce congestion in the toilet as there are an
additional number of toilets within the Kisumu National Polytechnic. Construction of six
doors toilet will help to adhere to the guidelines of Covid protocols. There will be proper
functioning of sewer line since the new toilet will have its own soil waste pipe.

KEY STAGE

i) Site investigation.

The site will be investigated by technical teams and check the water level of the land. This
will help us to know the type of excavation to use.

ii) Site clearance.

After the investigation one trained personnel together with two unskilled personnel's will
proceed to the site for clearance.

iii) Setting out.

After site clearance 3, 4, 5 methods will be used to set out the structure, where the
following tools will be used pegs, nails builder square, builder line and white powder.

iv) Construction process.

i
The wall will be constructed using bricks, other materials which will be used are cement of
about 50 bags, sand 12 tones, balast 25 tones. The slab area will be (5000 by 3000) mm.

ii
CLIENTS REQUIREMENTS

The Kisumu National Polytechnic intends to construct 5 door toilet within the school. This is
due to increased population in the institution and need for more rooms to avoid congestion.
They also thought it wise to ensure that the Covid rules are observed.

PLUMBING WORK

With the help of skilled plumber who will hired, he will help us in pipe fittings and
connection of service pipes to the taps and flushes in the toilet. He will also connect waste
pipe to sewer line.

SITE LOCATION OF THE PROJECT

The site will be located in between Building and Applied Science Department in The Kisumu
National Polytechnic.

Common questions

Powered by AI

The inclusion of a skilled plumber is crucial because they ensure that the pipe fittings and connections, including taps and flushes, are correctly installed. They also connect waste pipes to the main sewer line, which is essential for proper sanitation and compliance with environmental regulations. This expertise guarantees functional and reliable plumbing infrastructure, critical to the project's success and hygiene standards .

Site investigation plays a crucial role in the successful implementation of the proposed toilet project by providing critical information on the water level of the land. This information helps determine the type of excavation necessary, ensuring the foundation is appropriate for the site's conditions. Technical teams, along with representatives from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), ensure adherence to environmental conservation practices during this stage .

Site preparation involves several steps: first, site investigation is carried out to assess environmental and water conditions. Then, site clearance is done to remove debris. Fencing and hoarding are implemented for privacy and security, while excavation provides the base for the floor foundation and pipe work. These steps ensure an efficient setup for construction while prioritizing safety and environmental compliance, aligning with technical and regulatory standards .

The design and construction of the toilet facilities address Covid-19 health guidelines by incorporating additional toilet stalls to reduce congestion, allowing for social distancing among users. The project also ensures that the new toilets are well-ventilated and hygienically equipped with modern fixtures connected to the main sewer line, promoting better sanitation and minimizing health risks .

The current toilet system faces challenges such as malfunctioning sewer lines, which reduce the flow of waste and result in hygiene issues. The new project addresses these by utilizing a modern design with a direct connection to the main sewer line, thus improving waste flow and environmental hygiene. Additionally, by adding more toilet facilities, the project aims to reduce congestion and adhere to social distancing measures .

Various professionals play critical roles in the project's completion: the architect oversees the overall design and functionality, the engineers ensure structural and technical integrity, and the contractors manage daily construction activities. Foremen and site agents coordinate labor and resources, while administrators and buyers handle logistics and materials procurement. Their effective coordination facilitates smooth workflow, timely progress, and adherence to standards, ultimately ensuring the project's success .

The construction process integrates local building practices by using locally available materials such as bricks, sand, and cement, while also employing traditional techniques like setting out with 3, 4, 5 methods. However, it innovatively aims for modern infrastructure by planning direct connections to the main sewer for effective waste management, and ensuring that the design supports Covid-19 compliance through spacious, additional facilities .

The proposal for constructing six additional toilet doors at the Kisumu National Polytechnic is primarily driven by an increased population at the institution, which necessitates more toilet facilities to reduce congestion. Additionally, the current infrastructure challenges, such as malfunctioning sewer lines, and the need to adhere to Covid-19 health guidelines including social distancing, also justify the project. The new toilets are expected to be connected to the main sewer line rather than a septic tank .

The project aims to meet international environmental and health standards by connecting the toilets to the main sewer line, improving waste management and reducing environmental impact. The design facilitates compliance with Covid-19 protocols by reducing user congestion through additional toilet facilities. Additionally, adherence to proper site investigation, environmental clearance, and technical requirements ensures alignment with international construction standards, enhancing the hygiene and health conditions of the polytechnic's environment .

Effectiveness of soil properties is assessed through laboratory testing of soil samples to determine their classification, plasticity, and bearing capacity. The results showing a bearing capacity of 20km/m3 confirm the soil's suitability for supporting the construction, influencing decisions on foundation design. This ensures the structural integrity and long-term durability of the toilet facilities .
