Profit Calculation on Mixtures

Rama mixes 20% kerosene with petrol, resulting in a total cost price of Rs. 108 and selling price of Rs. 120, yielding a profit of 11.11%. For sugar, a mixture of Rs. 30 and Rs. 45 per kg should be in a ratio of 2:1 to achieve a selling price of Rs. 42 per kg with a 20% profit. Suman buys wheat at different prices and should sell the mixture at approximately Rs. 13.80 per kg to gain a 5% profit.

Type III

1. Rama mixes 20% of kerosene to his petrol and then he sells the whole mixture at the
price of petrol. If the cost price of the kerosense is 40% of the CP of petrol. What is the
net profit%?

🔹1st Line:
"Rama mixes 20% of kerosene to his petrol"
➡ This means:
For 100 litres of petrol, he adds 20 litres of kerosene
So total = 120 litres of mixture

🔹2nd Line:
"and then he sells the whole mixture at the price of petrol."
➡ He sells the entire 120 litres at the full petrol price (no discount).

🔹3rd Line:
"If the cost price of the kerosene is 40% of the CP of petrol."
➡ Let’s assume CP of petrol = Rs. 1 per litre
Then CP of kerosene = Rs. 0.40 per litre

🔹Now let’s calculate:

● Cost Price of 100 litres petrol = 100 × 1 = Rs. 100

● Cost Price of 20 litres kerosene = 20 × 0.40 = Rs. 8

● Total CP of 120 litres mixture = 100 + 8 = Rs. 108

● Selling Price (SP) = Sold at petrol rate = 120 × 1 = Rs. 120

🔹Profit = SP - CP = 120 - 108 = Rs. 12

🔹Profit % = (Profit / CP) × 100
= (12 / 108) × 100 = 11.11%

✅ Final Answer:
Profit = 11.11%

2. In what ratio sugar at Rs. 30 per kg should be mixed with sugar at Rs. 45 per kg so that
on sell. ing the mixture at Rs. 42 per kg there is a profit of 20%

🔹1st line:
"In what ratio sugar at Rs. 30 per kg should be mixed with sugar at Rs. 45 per kg"
➡ We have two types of sugar:

● Type 1 = Rs. 30/kg

● Type 2 = Rs. 45/kg
Let’s assume we mix them in the ratio x : y.

🔹2nd line:
"so that on selling the mixture at Rs. 42 per kg there is a profit of 20%"
➡ Selling Price (SP) = Rs. 42/kg
➡ Profit = 20%
➡ That means the Cost Price (CP) of the mixture should be:

CP = SP / (1 + Profit%)
CP = 42 / 1.2 = Rs. 35 per kg

🔹Use allegation rule now:

We place values like this (higher - middle) and (middle - lower):

Cheaper (Rs. 30) : Cost Price (Rs. 35) : Dearer (Rs. 45)
↓ ↓ ↓
(45 - 35) = 10 ← Ratio → (35 - 30) = 5

So the required ratio = 10 : 5 = 2 : 1

✅ Final Answer:
Sugar at Rs. 30 : Sugar at Rs. 45 = 2 : 1

5. Suman buys 40 kg of wheat at Rs. 12.50/kg and 30 kg of wheat at Rs.14/kg. At what rate
per kg should he sell the mixture to gain 5% on the whole?

Let’s solve this line by line, step by step:

🔹1st line:
"Suman buys 40 kg of wheat at Rs. 12.50/kg"
➡ Total cost = 40 × 12.50 = Rs. 500

🔹2nd line:
"and 30 kg of wheat at Rs.14/kg."
➡ Total cost = 30 × 14 = Rs. 420

➕ Now, find the total cost and total quantity:

● Total wheat = 40 + 30 = 70 kg
● Total cost = 500 + 420 = Rs. 920

➡ So, Cost Price (CP) per kg = 920 ÷ 70 = Rs. 13.14 (approx)

🔹3rd line:
"At what rate per kg should he sell the mixture to gain 5% on the whole?"
➡ Selling Price (SP) = CP × (1 + 5%)
➡ SP = 13.14 × 1.05 = Rs. 13.80 (approx)

✅ Final Answer:
Suman should sell the mixture at Rs. 13.80 per kg to gain 5%.
