Exploring the Role of Social Agents in the Socialization Process of the Young Generation
in Bangladesh

1. Introduction

Socialization is the process through which individuals, especially young people, learn the
norms, values, behaviors, and cultural practices of their society. It helps them understand how
to interact with others and fit into their community. In terms of individual persons, the goal of
socialization is to equip him or her with the basic values, norms, skills, etc., so that he or she
will behave and act properly in the social group to which they belong.

In Bangladesh, young people are influenced by various social agents that shape their identity,
attitude, and future roles in society. These social agents include family, education, peer groups,
media, religion, and government policies. In Bangladesh, the socialization of youth is
influenced by both traditional and modern ways. While family and religious institutions instill
cultural and moral values, education provides knowledge and discipline. At the same time, peer
groups and social media shape aspirations, opinions, and lifestyles. The interaction between
these forces determines how young people adapt to societal expectations and global trends.

Below is a detailed analysis of how these agents contribute to the socialization process of the
youth in Bangladesh.

2. Explanation of Social Agents

2.1 Family: The Primary Agent of Socialization

The family is the first and most influential agent in shaping a child’s personality, values, and
behavior.

The family is the primary agency of socialization. It is here that the child develops an initial
sense of self and habit training—eating, sleeping, etc. Almost all children are raised by
biological, adoptive, or foster families, who teach them how to care for themselves and how to
interact with the world around them. Of all the agents of socialization, for example, family is
the one that is typically the most impactful.
Role in Socialization:

• In rural areas, traditional joint family systems play a bigger role, whereas in urban areas,
nuclear families expose children to more independence.
• Provides emotional and financial support, which affects educational and career choices.
• Teaches cultural values, traditions, and ethics.
• Develops a sense of responsibility and discipline.

2.2 Education System

The education system is important for shaping knowledge and moral development. Schools,
colleges, and universities are essential institutions that teach academic knowledge, discipline,
and civic responsibilities.

Role in Socialization:

• Develops critical thinking and creativity.

• Raises social awareness among students.
• Provides formal education and career development.

2.3 Media and Technology

Media is the dominant force in shaping youth perspectives, with social media and digital
platforms playing a significant role. Also, television, social media, and newspapers shape
perceptions and awareness.

Since the last century, technological innovations such as radio, motion picture, and television
have become important agents of socialization.

Role in Socialization:

• Giving people access to information they may not otherwise have had.
• Allowing individuals to connect with friends and family.
• Helps to make independent opinions on politics and social issues.
• Helps to know global culture, knowledge, and trends.
• Exposes young people to global perspectives, trends, and digital literacy.
2.4 Religious Institutions

Religion plays an important role in guiding ethical and spiritual values.

It also is an important avenue of socialization for many people. Many religious institutions
uphold gender norms and contribute to their enforcement through socialization. Mosques,
temples, and churches impart moral and ethical values.

Role in Socialization:

• They teach participants how to interact with the religion’s culture like namaz, a prayer,
or a communion wafer.
• Helps in maintaining cultural traditions and identity.
• Instills a sense of morality, community service, and ethical behavior.

2.5 Peer Groups

Friends and peer groups play a crucial role, especially during adolescence and early adulthood.

Role in Socialization:

• Influence fashion, language, and entertainment choices.

• Encourage participation in social activities, clubs, and youth organizations.

3. Evidence Supporting the Role of Social Agents

Case Study:

A study by the Bangladesh Institute of Social Research (BISR) found that 78% of urban youth
rely on social media for information, influencing their opinions and social behavior.

Statistics:

A 2022 survey by BRAC University revealed that 65% of students consider peer influence a
major factor in their decision-making.
4. My Opinion

In my opinion, social agents significantly influence young individuals in developing their

identities and integrating into society. While family, religion, and education have historically
shaped youth identity, social media and global culture are now acting as "silent" social agents
that often operate beyond parental or institutional control. This has also created a dual
socialization process—one rooted in traditional Bangladeshi values and another shaped by
global digital interactions.

However, I believe that the evolving socialization process in Bangladesh presents an

opportunity. If social agents, especially education and parents, adapt to these changes and guide
the youth toward critical thinking, responsible digital use, and inclusive values, the younger
generation can develop into socially responsible, innovative, and globally competitive
individuals. It is not just how social agents influence youth but how they can adapt and
synchronize to guide the younger generation in a way that balances cultural heritage with global
engagement.

The key to positive socialization lies in balancing tradition with modernity, ensuring that all
youth have access to education and opportunities that foster personal and social growth.

5. Conclusion

Each social agent contributes uniquely to the socialization of young individuals in Bangladesh.
While these agents play vital roles, it is essential to create a balanced approach where traditional
values and modern influences coexist harmoniously. The challenge lies in blending these
influences to ensure a positive and productive socialization process for the parents, educators,
and policymakers.

To ensure a well-rounded socialization process, there needs to be a balance between preserving

cultural values and adapting to new influences that will help in shaping a generation that thrives
in both worlds.

Socialization should not be a passive process; it requires critical thinking and active
participation.

And policymakers should work collectively to guide young individuals toward constructive
development.
