Incompressible Flow and Navier-Stokes Analysis

The document contains a tutorial with questions related to incompressible flow fields and the Navier-Stokes equations. It includes tasks such as determining the validity of velocity fields, calculating pressure distributions, and analyzing flow characteristics in various scenarios. The tutorial also explores the velocity distribution between parallel plates and the development of equations for steady-state velocity profiles in laminar flow conditions.

Questions on NVS
1. For incompressible flow field, the velocity vector is of the following term
V=Kxi + Kyj – 2Kzk
a) Determine if this field is valid solution of navier- stokes equation.
b) If g= -gk, find the pressure if field P(x,y,z).
c) What is the significance of terms in the pressure field obtained in part (b).
d) Is the flow irrotational?
2. In incompressible flow velocity vector is given as
V= 6yi + 2x j
a) Find the corresponding acceleration vector.
b) Is the acceleration radial or linear?
c) Just for a quick revision, find the equation of streams and plot the contours on plain paper.
d) Assume the fluid is Newtonian (constant viscosity) and determine whether this flow
satisfies the Navier- stokes equation.
e) If in the 1st part the acceleration vector somehow come to be zero, then was there a necessity
to solve pard (d), what is your opinion.
f) Determine the pressure distribution equation p(x, y), if given that p(0, 0) =p0 = Constant (
use solution from pard (d))
3. In a cartesian coordinate system, a steady, incompressible velocity field of a Newtonian fluid
is given by V = u0 (1-ay2 ) i
Here, v= velocity vector in m/s
i= unit vector in x direction
u0 =positive, real constant (m/s)
a = positive, real constant (m-2)
thus, what will be the absolute value of the pressure gradient in pa/ m\
4. An incompressible viscous fluid is placed between two infinite horizontal parallel plates. The
plates move in the opposite direction with constant velocity u1 and u2. The pressure gradient in
the x- direction is zero and the only body force is due to the fluid weight. The flow is steady,
laminar, and two-dimensional. Assume the velocity component in y rection to be zero. What
will be the expression for the velocity distribution between plates?
5. Oil is confined between two long and broad parallel vertical plates (see figure below) and the
distance between the plates is B. The plate on the left is stationary while the right plate is
moving with a contact velocity vo in the vertical upward direction (see figure below). Assuming
laminar flow conditions with the help of Navier-Strokes equation develop an equation for the
steady state velocity profile in the fluid. State all the assumptions taken to solve and mention
all the boundary conditions.
