Before Invention of CAD

In 1957, first commercial
CAD system, PRONTO was
released by Dr. Patrick J.
Hanratty, considered the
"Father of CAD.“

It wasn’t until the late

1980s and early 1990s that
CAD software became
capable enough to be
practical in engineering
design.

Computer Aided Drawing(CAD) and Computer Aided

Drafting(CADr)
Computer-aided design (CAD) can be defined as the use of computer systems to
assist in the creation, modification, analysis, or optimization of a design.
• It is the technology concerned with the use of digital computers to perform
certain functions in design and production.
• Example: 3D model of the entire bridge structure, including the roads,
supports, and foundations.
Computer-Aided Drafting (CADr) is the use of computer technology to create,
modify, analyze, and optimize 2D and 3D technical drawings and designs.
• It replaces manual drafting with a digital interface that supports automation
and complex calculations.
• Example: Blue prints of Site plans, construction details or structural drawings
