What Is It

Mathematical expressions like x2 – y is an example of algebraic expression.

Algebraic Expression - is a group of terms separated by the plus or minus sign.

For example, x – 2 or 4x + y – 45

We have learned that, in an algebraic expression, letters can stand for numbers.
Here are the steps for evaluating an expression:

1. Replace each letter in the expression with the assigned value.

First, replace each letter in the expression with the value that has been
assigned to it. To make your calculations clear and avoid mistakes, always
enclose the numbers you're substituting inside parentheses. The value that's
given to a variable stays the same throughout the entire problem, even if the
letter occurs more than once in the expression.

However, since variables "vary", the value assigned to a particular variable

can change from problem to problem, just not within a single problem.

2. Perform the operations in the expression using the correct order of

operations.
Once you've substituted the value for the letter, do the operations to find the
value of the expression. Don't forget to use the correct order of operations:
first do any operations involving exponents, then do multiplication and
division, and finally do addition and subtraction! (PEMDAS)

EXAMPLES

Make sure the equation is clear and you know which

Evaluate: variable is which. It's a good idea to write the expression
2x3 – x2 + y down and what each variable is. Leave yourself enough room
for x = 3, y = –2 to work out the problem line by line, with each step right
below the previous one.

Replace each variable in the expression with its value. In this

example, this means each x becomes a 3 and each y
2(3)3 – (3)2 + (–2)
becomes a –2. It's a good idea to use parentheses to keep
track of this. Tip: Be extra careful with negative numbers!

2(27) – 9 + (–2) Perform operations with exponents.

54 – 9 + (–2) Perform operations with multiplication.
43 Perform operations with addition and subtraction.

What I Need To Know

At the end of this lesson, you are expected to:
o add and subtract polynomials; and
o solve problems involving addition and subtraction of polynomials.

6
What Is It

Here are the steps required for Adding and Subtracting Polynomials:
Step 1: Remove all parentheses. Write the polynomials in standard form
(descending order) and arrange the similar terms in a column.

When adding, distribute the positive (or addition) sign, which

does not change any of the signs.

When subtracting, distribute the negative (or subtraction) sign,

which changes each sign after the subtraction sign.

Step 2: Combine like terms.

Note: To combine like terms means to add the numerical

coefficients and copy the common literal coefficients.

Example 1. Simplify: (3x3 – 5x + 9) + (6x3 + 8x – 7)

Step 1: Remove all parentheses.

Step 2: Combine like terms.

Example 2. Simplify: (–3x2 + 9xy – 5y2) – (4x2 + 7xy – 8y2)

Step 1: Remove all parentheses.

Change the sign of the subtrahend.

Step 2: Combine like terms.

7
Example 3. Simplify: (5x3 – 7x2 – 8) – (4x2 + 5x – 6)

Step 1: Remove all parentheses. In

this case, notice I left a blank in the
first row to help align the like terms,
making them easier to combine in
the next step.

Step 2: Combine like terms.

Example 4. Add 4x3 – 9x + 3 and 5x2 – 4x + 7.

Step 1: Write the problem using

parentheses. We should use
parentheses in this type of problem
because we are adding groups of
terms.

Step 2: Remove all parentheses. In

this case, notice I left a blank in the
first row to help align the like terms,
making them easier to combine in
the next step.

Step 3: Combine like terms.

Example 5. Subtract 4x2 – 7x + 5 from 3x2 – 2x + 6.

Step 1: Write the problem using

parentheses. We should use
parentheses in this type of problem
because we are subtracting groups
of terms.

Step 2: Remove all parentheses.

Change the sign of the subtrahend.

Step 3: Combine like terms.

What’s More

: NOW IT’S YOUR TURN!

I. Instructions: Add/Subtract the following polynomials. Show your solutions.
1.) 5x4 – 3x2 + 4 2.) 8a – 15b – 5c 3.) 25x2 – 9x + 5
+ 6x3 – 4x2 – 7 + –9a + 8b – 8c + 12x2 + 7x – 9

4.) 5x3 – 7x2 + 3x – 4 5.) 35m2 + 16mn – 36n2

– 8x3 + 2x2 + 3x – 7 – 9m2 + 42mn + 4n2 –20

II. Solve the following. Show your solutions. (Note: You can only add and subtract
like terms)

1. What must be added to 23x + 7y + 13 to get 35x – 28y + 5?

2. If 7a2 –12b3 –5c4 is added to 4c4 + 3b3 + 9a2, what is the sum?
3. What must be subtracted from 16x3 + 32x2 –12x + 25 to get a
difference of 27x3 + 13x2 –5x –15?
4. Subtract 45x2y + 6xy2 –22xy from the sum of 52x2y –23xy2 + 17xy and
–25x2y + 15xy2 + 21xy.

What I Need To Remember

Rule for Adding Polynomials:

 Arrange similar terms in column then add the

numerical coefficients using the rule in addition
of signed numbers and bring down the literal
coefficients.

Rule for Subtracting Polynomials:

 Arrange similar terms in column then change
the sign of the subtrahend and proceed to the
rule of addition.

Similar or like terms are the terms with the same

literal coefficients.

The numerical coefficient is the numerical factor in a

monomial.
The literal coefficient is the literal factor in a
monomial.

3x 3x + 1

2x –1

SOLUTIONS:

1. P = 2l + 2w 2. P = 2a + 2b + c
= 2(2x – 1) + 2(3x) = 2(4x+ 2) + 2(3x) + (3x +1)

= 4x – 2 + 6x = 8x + 4 + 6x + 3x + 1
= 10x – 2 = 17x + 5

TRY THIS! Find the perimeter.
