Solving Word Problems Involving
Conversion of Units of Measurement
About the Module
This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you master
about Converting Units of Measurements and Solving Problems Involving Conversion
of Units of Measurements. The scope of this module permits it to be used in many
different learning situations. The language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary
level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the
course. But the order in which you read them can be changed to correspond with
the textbook you are now using.

CONVERSION OF COMMON ENGLISH UNITS OF
MEASUREMENTS FOR LENGTH
1 foot (ft) = 12 inches (in)
1 yard (yd) = 3 feet (ft)
mile (mi) = 1,760 yards (yd)
In order to help Jessie with her project, we first answer the question:
How many feet are there in 120 inches?
4
3. Write the unit in the final answer. = 10 𝑓𝑒𝑒𝑡
Going back to Jessie’s project, are 10 strips of different colors which are 1 foot each be enough to
make her project? The answer is yes. Because 10 strips which are 1 foot each is equal to 10 feet.
Ten feet is equal to 120 inches.
5
Let us convert measurement for mass.
64

6
4 000
= 𝑙𝑏𝑠
1
c. Write the unit in the final answer.
= 4 000 𝑙𝑏𝑠
7
a. Multiply the original measurement (which is a whole
number) to the numerator. Factor out the unit of years 1 𝑠𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑒
100 𝑦𝑟𝑠 ( )
in the original measurement and the conversion factor. 20 𝑦𝑟𝑠

Lesson Converting Metric Measurements
2 From One Unit to Another
What’s In

What’s New
9
What Is It
1. Identify the original unit which is cm. Using the metric converter, we move
units from cm to m. Let us count two units to the left.
2. Moving 2 units to the left means that we are going to move the decimal
point of our given measurement, which is 500, two units to the left as well.
500. = 5.00 or 5
Therefore, 500 cm is equal to 5 m.
10
Therefore, 6 kg is
equal to 6 000 000 6kg = 6,000,000 mg
mg.
What’s More
11
What I Need To Remember
➢ Identify the unit of the given measurement. Move from the given
unit to the target unit.
• If you move to the right, move the decimal point of your
given measurement to the right.
• If you move to the left, move the decimal point of your given
measurement to the left.
