Teaching Material

Once upon a time in West Java, there lived a writer king who had a beautiful
daughter. Her name is Dayang Sumbi. She loves to weave. Once he was weaving
cloth when one of his tools fell to the ground. He was very tired, at the same time he
was too lazy to take it. Then he just shouted loudly.

Is anyone there! Bring me my tools. I will give you a special gift. If you are
female. I will think of you as my sister if you are a boy I will marry you suddenly a
male dog his name Tumang comes. He brings her a falling tool. Dayang Sumbi was
very surprised. He regretted his words but he couldn't deny it. So he married Tumang
and left his father. Then they lived in a small village. A few months later they had a
son. His name is Sangkuriang. He is a handsome and healthy boy.

Sangkuriang really likes hunting, especially deer. He often hunts into the
forest using his arrows. When he went hunting, Tumang was always with him.

One day Dayang Sumbi wanted to have a deer's heart so she asked
Sangkuriang to hunt deer. Then Sangkuriang went to the wood with his arrow and his
loyal dog. Tumang, but after a few days in the forest Sangkuriang did not find any
deer. Then where did it all disappear. Sangkuriang was exhausted and desperate. He
didn't want to disappoint his mother so he killed Tumang. He did not know that
Tumang was his father. Tumang's heart for his mother. But Dayang Sumbi knew that
it was Tumang's heart. He was so angry that he couldn't control his emotions. He hit
Sangkuriang on the head. Sangkuriang was injured. There is a scar on his head. He
also kicked out his son. Sangkuriang left his mother in sorrow.

Years passed and Sangkuriang became a strong young man. He roams


everywhere. One day he arrived. in his own village but he didn't realize it. There he
met Dayang Sumbi. At that time Dayang Sumbi was given eternal beauty by God so
that she was forever young. The two of them do know each other. So they fell in love
and then they decided to get married. But then Dayang Sumbi recognized the scar on
Sangkuriang's head. He knew that Sangkuriang was his son. It was impossible for
them to get married. She tells him but he doesn't believe her. He hopes they get
married soon. So Dayang Sumbi gave very difficult conditions. He asked
Sangkuriang to build a lake and a boat in one night! He says he needs it for
honeymoon.

Sangkuriang agreed. With the help of genies and spiritists, Sangkuriang was
tired of building them. By midnight he had finished the lake by building a dam on the
Citarum river. Then he started making boats. It was almost dawn when he almost
finished it. Meanwhile Dayang Sumbi kept an eye on him. He was very worried when
he found out this. So he made a lamp in the east. Then the spirits thought it was
dawn. It was time for them to leave. They left Sangkuriang alone. Without their help
he could not finish his boat.

Sangkuriang was angry. He kicked the boat. Then the boat capsized. Leter,
became Mount Tangkuban Perahu. Which means the boat capsized. From a distance
the mountain really looks like an overturned boat.

A long time ago, very few people lived in the New Territories. There were
only a few villages. If the people wanted to go from one village to another, they often
had to pass through wild and unsafe forest.

One day, a farmer’s young wife went to the next village to visit her own
mother and brother. She brought along her baby son. When it was time for her to
leave, her brother said “ it is getting dark. Let my son, Ah Tim go with you though
the forest.”

So Ah Tim led the way and the young woman followed behind, carrying her
baby. When they were in the forest, suddenly they saw a group of wolves. They
began to run to avoid the danger, but Ah Tim kicked against a stone and fell down. At
once the wolves caught him. The young woman cried to the wolves, “ please eat my
own son instead.” Then, she put her baby son on the ground in front of the wolves
and took her nephew away. Everyone understood that this was because the woman
was very good and kind. She had offered her own son’s life to save her nephew.

They ran back to the house and called for help. All men in the village fetched
thick sticks and went back with her into the forest. When they got there, they saw
something very strange. Instead of eating the woman’s baby the wolves were playing
with him.

Once upon a time there lived a little girl named Snow White. He lives with his
aunt and uncle because his parents are dead.

One day he overheard his uncle and aunt talking about leaving Snow White in
the castle because they both wanted to go to America and they didn't have enough
money to take Snow White.

Snow White didn't want her uncle and aunt to do that, so she decided that it
would be best if she ran away. The next morning he ran into the forest. He was very
tired and hungry. Then he saw a small hut. He knocked but no one answered so he
went inside and fell asleep.

Meanwhile, the seven dwarves came home from work. There they found
Snow White sleeping. Then Snow White woke up. He saw the dwarves.

The dwarves said, "What is your name?"

Snow White said, "My name is Snow White."

Then, Snow White told the whole story to the dwarves.

The dwarves said, "If you want, you can stay here with us."

Snow White replied, “Oh, may I? Thank you."

Finally, Snow White and the seven dwarfs live happily ever after

Once upon a time, on the island of Bali there lived a giant creature named
Kbo Iwo. The Balinese used to say that Kbo Iwo was everything, both destroyer and
creator. He was satisfied with his food, but this meant for the Balinese there was
enough food for a thousand people.

Troubles arise when for the first time the barns are almost empty and the new
harvest is still far away. This made Kbo Iwo go wild with great anger. In his hunger,
he destroyed all the houses and even all the temples. It made the Balinese people
angry.

So, they got together to plan steps to fight this powerful giant using his
stupidity. They asked Kbo Iwo to build them a very deep well, and rebuild all the
houses and temples he had destroyed. After they fed Kbo Iwo, he started digging a
deep hole.

One day he ate too much, he fell asleep in the hole. The oldest man in the
village gave a signal, and the villagers started throwing the limestone they had
collected earlier into the hole. The limestone made the water in the hole boil. Kbo
Iwo was buried alive. Then the water in the well rose higher and higher until it finally
overflowed and formed Lake Batur. The mound dug from the well by Kbo Iwo is
known as Mount Batur.

Once upon a time there was a poor widow who had an only son named Jack.
They were so poor that they had nothing but a cow. When the cow was too old, his
mother sent Jack to the market to sell it. On his way to the market, Jack meets a
butcher who has some beautiful beans in his hands. The butcher told the boy that
beans were precious and persuaded the stupid boy to sell the cow for beans.

Jack took them, gladly. When she told her mother about this, her mother
became so angry that she threw the beans out the window. When Jack woke up in the
morning, he felt the sun shining through most of his room, but the rest was quite dark
and shady. So he jumped to the window. What did he see? The nut tree grew quite
close past Jack's window. He opened the window and jumped onto the bean tree

around, he saw a very large castle. He was so amazed. Then Jack walked along the
path to the castle. There was a big tailed woman in the doorway. Jack greeted him
and asked the giant's mercy to give him breakfast, as he was very hungry. Although
the giantess grumbled at first, she ended up giving Jack a loaf of bread and cheese
and a bottle of milk.

Jack wasn't done yet when the whole house started shaking with the sound of
someone coming. "Oh! This is my husband!" shouted the giant. “What should I do?”
