Tutorial – 6 (Blast Effects using NONLIN)
You have been tasked with evaluating an existing one-story building for blast effects due to a 100-
pound TNT-equivalent explosive charge at a standoff distance of 40 feet. The eave height is 12 feet
and the exterior walls are vertically spanning solid precast concrete panels 6 inches thick, with #5
reinforcing bars centered and at a uniform spacing of 12 inches. Assume normal weight concrete,
f'c = 5,000 psi, and fy = 60,000 psi.
1. Calculate the scaled distance Z = R / W1/3.
2. Determine the incident pressure and impulse (angle of incidence = 90 degrees) and the
corresponding effective duration.
3. Determine the reflected pressure and impulse (angle of incidence = 0 degrees) and the
corresponding effective duration.
4. For a 1-foot-wide strip of wall panel: (Use hand calculations)
1.
1. Calculate the maximum total blast load.
2. Using a coefficient of 0.78, calculate the total effective mass.
3. Using an average increase factor of 1.10 and dynamic increase factors of 1.19 for
concrete and 1.17 for reinforcing steel, calculate the total effective resistance.
Neglect axial forces due to self-weight.
4. Calculate the gross and cracked section moments of inertia. Using the average of
these, calculate the total effective stiffness. (For undergraduate students, use
Ig=216 in4 and Icr=32.4 in4
5. Calculate the period of vibration and the yield deflection.
6. Calculate the critical ductility ratio associated with a support rotation limit of 2
degrees and the corresponding response modification factor, and then determine
whether the flexural response is acceptable.
7. Calculate the static design reactions and determine whether the shear capacity is
acceptable.
5. Using Nonlin determine the "actual" ductility ratio and support rotation.
6. Compare your results from hand calculations and Nonlin
