During the Spanish colonial period, reduccion, which was the method of relocating settlers towards
the center of the poblacion, was practiced in San Jose, Centro Da Baloges. The practice was widely
spread as part of the movement to spread Catholicism to the remote areas of Bulacan. Therefore, in
March 1750 a decree from the Archbishop of Manila on the creation of new municipalities was announced
in Lagulo Church in Meycauayan; the decree included the list of families who volunteered to be relocated.
From being a visita/bisita of Meycauayan, San Jose Del Monte was thereafter founded as a municipality
on March 2, 1752. This reduccion from Meycauayan brought settlers to the place where the occupants
were previously only the Itas and Dumagats. The name of the town was taken from San Jose Del Monte,
a phrase that is a combination of the patron saint of the town and “Del Monte”, which means “of the
mountains”. Further accounts of the history of the town can be found in the work of Dr. Jaime
Veneracion of the Departamento ng Kasaysayan of the University of the Philippines Diliman. The new
municipality’s population, which was not exceeding 200 people, belonged to the family of farmers and
stonecutters of Libtong and Meycauayan. They lived a simple lifestyle and raised fish, root crops,
vegetables, fruits and other natural products. These families brought with them rice, wine, nganga, and
salt from Lagulo (now Malhacan) in exchange for the wild pigs, deer, yantok and almasigan of the Itas

Under the American regime in 1901, San Jose Del Monte (SJDM) was placed under the political
supervision of Sta. Maria, Bulacan due to the town’s lack of progress, peace, and order. In 1903, Act 932
of the US-established Philippine Commission bolstered this supervision. Then, on January 1, 1918,
the town became an independent municipality with Honorable Ciriaco Gallardo as the first Municipal
Mayor through Executive Order No. 100 by then Governor-General Francis Burton Harrison. The City
had its share of violent historical events. The Japanese Imperial Army took over the local government of
San Jose del Monte from 1942-1943. In resistance against the occupation of the Japanese, the
population of the municipality formed its own guerrilla unit. Also, during the latter parts of the Second
World War, SJDM experienced many casualties when the Americans bombed the Poblacion on January
11, 1945. This was repeated on January 14, 1945. Years later, dissidents burned the Municipal Building
on October 10, 1950. Further reorganizations inside the City happened as the population grew and as the
system of national laws matured. The year 1961 marked the opening of the first Government
Resettlement Project, the SapangPalay Resettlement Area, which covered 752 hectares. On January 25,
1978, nine barangays were created under P.D. 1292. With the passage of the new local government
code in 1991 emanated the reformulation of equal wealth sharing between the national and local units

and the realization of the residents of having their own barangays. This move led to the creation of an
The reorganization and increasing population also induced changes in the executive and legislative
administration of the City as a whole. On September 10, 2000, SJDM was proclaimed as a Component
City under Republic Act No. 8797. Due to such event, it was said to be the largest town in the whole
province of Bulacan in terms of land area and population. In addition, the City, also known as the
“Balcony of the Metropolis”, was recorded as the first City in the province of Bulacan and recorded as
the 86th City of the Philippines. On December 18, 2003, the City of San Jose became the “1st Lone
Congressional District in Bulacan”. As the new millennium marches on, the population of the City
registers a booming population. It continues to grow as settlements mushroomed in strategic areas of the
Municipality to catch the urbanization that is happening in the Greater Metro Manila region.

2000 - The conversion of San Jose del Monte into a Component City, being the first city of
four famous barangays that really helped and contributed a lot to the history and present of the rising city.
These barangays not only contributed to the population of the said city but also, and especially, to the
innovation and enhancement of it. These barangays are Muzon, Pabahay 2000, and Muzon Heights. The
three barangays are popularly known for the great contribution they make to the city, from their cultures,
Muzon - The Barangay Muzon is derived from the word “Mujon”. In the early Spanish era, whenever
foreign Spaniards were resting from their journey, they saw a large “Mujon”. Since then, it has been called
the Mujon area and has since become “Muzon”. On December 22, 1842, Muzon became an official
barangay, including the first nine barangays of San Jose del Monte, Bulacan. Among the first families in
Barangay Muzon were the family of Nieto, Casas, Gojo Cruz, Feliciano, Disquitado, Flores,

Mateo, De Leon, and Policarpio. Barangay Muzon became the center of San Jose del Monte because it
became a center of agriculture and gardening, which were the livelihoods of the inhabitants at the time.
Pabahay 2000 - The National Housing Authority of San Jose del Monte Bulacan resettlement housing

Muzon
The most distinct Barangay Muzon, is known for being the most populous barangay in Region 3. It
also has two large relocation sites that are known for helping and assisting the citizens of it whenever a
natural calamity happens. It is the center of agriculture in the rising city because it produces a lot of
different vegetables and fruits, which is considered a business by many. But also, the barangay of Muzon
“Kapag dumarami ang tao sa isang barangay, mas dumarami ang mga pangangailangan at kagustuhan
at kapag hindi natutugunan iyon, magiging problema at iyon ang kahinaan ng Muzon dahil sobrang dami
ng populasiyon.” Hon. Edgar Celis said in the interview that not only because they are known and popular
for being an overpopulated barangay in Region 3, that is also their weakness. Because people's needs
and wants will never stop until they are contented, as much as possible, Hon. Edgar Celis needs to try to
give all they need so it will not cause any problems that can be a hindrance to a barangay. While the
“Yung strength ng Barangay Muzon is `yung people mismo, for example, `yung bakery diyan walang
bumibili noon pero maraming tatangkilik dahil din sa mga tao, so ayun ang strength..” The strength of
Barangay Muzon is the people helping each other and give hands whenever they needed it, it actually not
only help the person they are helping but rather the way that person live.
In terms of the of the environment before in Barangay Muzon, according to one locality of the said
barangay, this barangay is very different from what it is right now; there`s no road actually in the said
barangay but rather a lot of grass everywhere and looks like a forest that can be a camping site. Muzon
was a very historic place in the past, with no cars and no public transportation. There are no buildings or
big infrastructure; mostly what is seen are small stores that are considered grocery stores by many locals.
Actually, the only store that remains right now is the “Mang Loding Store” nearby the road; it was the most
famous store in the old days because you could buy from them different products that were useful on an
everyday basis.
Meanwhile, Hon. Edgar Celis, the mayor of Barangay Muzon, said that the mindset of people living in the
said place has never changed, due to the fact that it doesn`t matter if the environment of the barangay
changed; the people and the way they acknowledge the old Muzon are still there.
Barangay Muzon did really change a lot in terms
of environment; usually all the localities that got interviewed for this paper told us that Muzon is better
now because not only the environment improved but also how they lived in it. What really changed the
muzon is how some investors see it. They have seen the potential of barangay Muzon due to the fact that
it has a lot of population, and they see it as the advantage of the said barangay to keep up, invest more in
The only thing that keeps Barangay Muzon in the old days is how they preserve their cultures. “Pagdating
sa mga festivals or kultura hangga`t maari pinapanatili, hangga`t maaari manatili ang mga lumanng

Feast of Sto. Cristo (March 5-6), celebrated its yearly feast by having special masses, opening a weekly
community pantry for the parishioners, and concluding the celebration with a thanksgiving and a
procession.
Along with the changes and the history of Barangay Muzon, the main contribution of the populous
barangay in central Luzon is its human resources. The majority of people living here may not be
professionalized, but apparently, the project of Barangay Muzon, which is the scholarship program for the
students who are willing to finish and get a stable job in the future, really helps how this barangay
contributed to the rising city. Scholars of Barangay Muzon, where there are 250 scholars every semester,
really rate up the capability of the localities of Muzon. In past years, they have built two Alternative
Learning System (ALS) schools and eight public schools. In terms of education, Muzon really has it all
and does their best to provide a way in which the future professionals in the barangay can be successful
in life. They believe that this is their best contribution to the rising city; it helps to improve the educational
system and literacy system of the Bulakenyos. It shapes up the future bulakenyos to be better in life, to
get a degree they can use in finding a job, an individual who is successful in the field they want, and an
bulakenyo that excels not only in the normal life, but rather in a life they have dreamt about.

“Pagdating sa edukasyon, ang mga mamamayan ng Muzon ay hindi man`ngayon ay mapunta roon na
ma-professionalize sila at malaking contribution `yon sa siyudad kase plus and minus `yon eh kase
nababawasan `yung mga batang pasaway tapos dumarami `yung mga batang produktibo.” Hon. Edgar
Celis said.
It may have done a lot of improvement in Barangay Muzon, but the only thing they can enhance more or
want to change is the illegal drugs of the barangay, where it is the main issue of the said barangay that
really affects many aspects of Barangay Muzon. “`yung problema pa `rin sa drugs, sa ngayon ay mayroon
tayong iisang police community na sana ay madagdagan.” Hon edgar celis admitted that the the illegal
drugs really affected so much life in barangay muzon because of the lacking of police that monitoring and

MUZON HEIGHTS
Muzon Heights may be considered a poor area of San Jose del Monte Bulacan because, way back
in the day, Muzon Heights didn`t have any electricity or water, which are very useful in everyday life.
“Wala kaming tubig, wala kaming ilaw, nag-iigib lang kami noon…” A locality said. Back in the old days,
Muzon Heights didn`t have a school, a tricycle area, or different stores and establishments. The only thing
they have is the nearby church that is open to them every day. "Isang simbahan lang ang mayroon kami
rito, the rest wala na." And a small barangay hall that is placed in a very small space.
“Noong dumating kami rito sa heights nung 2013, ang mayroon lang ay simbahan at `yung barangay
natin ay nasa maliit na puwesto lamang.” Ms. Annafel Alvarado said. It is a place full of grass and houses
that are placed and stick together with the same style, interior, and color. The water is being taken into a
deep well because they don`t have any supply from a faucet. The road is very muddy and dirty that you
will be needed a plastic booths to walk into it. The transportation is also very difficult; when you go to a
market, you will need to ride a maximum of four transportation rides just to get there, and it will cost so
much that people here in the old days just decided to walk a very long way into the market.

“Kaunti lang din ang mga tao, `yung paninda ko dati walang bumibili kase konti ang tao pero ngayon
marami na..” One locality said that the only people living in the Muzon Heights are the individuals who are
given free houses by the government due to the fact that they are in crisis and needed a place to live in.
In terms of the cultures and traditions in Muzon Heights, the barangay officials interviewed really saw how
the people living in Muzon Heights tried their best to cooperate and collaborate with the barangay. For
example, most of the teenagers or young ones in Muzon Heights cooperate in different programs held by
the barangays, such as the Liga, where young people who have a talent in basketball pushed themselves
Also, many young individuals in Muzon Heights collaborate with different activities by practicing their
leadership by joining different organizations held by the barangay, which not only served as a hobby or
past time for youngsters but also a guide if they wanted to pursue a career in leadership.

In terms of people, there are two words to describe the individuals in Muzon Heights: generous and
helpful. People living in the said barangay often help each other, especially in tough times where they
needed it most. They always land their hands on someone or something that needed assistance and
guidance, which makes the barangay heights a barangay full of helpers and guiders because they do not
only think about themselves but rather think about the co-individuals in a very broad way. They are also
generous people because they often give someone something without asking for anything in return.
The contribution that San Jose del Monte Muzon Heights has made is that since it became more civilized,
the poverty rate of San Jose del Monte Heights has been much lower than usual. Since the pandemic,
the citizens of the said barangay have become much more hardworking and productive in keeping their
jobs and businesses in demand, which not only helps themselves but also lowers the poverty rate of the
barangay. Back in the old days, many people used to think that Muzon Heights were very disorderly, full
of troubles, and very "skwater" in style of environment. But as it goes and progresses so much more, the
thinking that Muzon Heights is not a place for people who want a peaceful life has vanished and been
replaced with "San Jose del Monte Heights is a place of progress, growth, and innovation."
But of course, Muzon Heights has one thing that it really wants to improve in the future, and that is the
living conditions of all the people in the said barangay. Both the localities and barangay officials
interviewed said the same thing: a much more stable life where there will be no more poor people in the

said barangay because, even though most are working there, we cannot just deny the fact that there are
still people who are left behind in life. And that is what they want changed and improved in the future,
where the unemployment rate will not only decrease but rather be gone forever because, in a world full of
advancements, being unproductive will have some negative consequences in life that will affect how you
Pabahay 2000
Pabahay is commonly known for being a trouble place, where it consists of holdups, gangs, people who
are taking illegal drugs, and so on. “Itong pabahay, kilala `yan bilang magulong lugar, ang tawag sa`min
dati ay magulo, mga magnanakaw noon.” People often say if they hear the place "pabahay," is "Ay
pabahay `yan, magugulo!" Back in the old days, when you left your things outside your home, like laundry
or food, they would be gone in a snap because people tended to steal things and foods from each other
because they were hungry and poor and needed things to stay alive.
Back in the old days, Pabahay was a very poor place, and the citizens of it were unemployed because the
people living there migrated from Manila and they didn`t know much more about the way of life in San
Jose del Monte, Bulacan. The environment back in the old days in Pabahay is very different. In the old
days, the roads were full of mud and the trash was not clean because there was no place to throw it
away.
But as the years go by, Pabhay 2000 has been improved and changed a lot. People back in the old days
have not helped nor guided each other, thinking that they should only help themselves to survive in life.

Mr. Dindo S. Daez, a former barangay tanod, told that when he was still a barangay tanod, he often saw
people arguing and cursing at each other and really acting as an "iskwater".
At the same time that the word "magulo" in Pabahay 2000 has vanished because of everything that has
changed in terms of cultures and traditions, they admit that they don`t preserve their cultures, such as the
famous festival of their barangay that is not celebrated anymore since the pandemic. It has been stopped
because it is usually done in May but has been moved to December, days before Christmas, and people
are not celebrating it due to the fact that they are busy preparing for the birth of Christ.
In terms of contribution, because of Pabahay 2000, San Jose Del Monte, Bulacan, won in many city
contests because of how it improved and progressed as one of the most famous barangays in the said
city. Also, voters in Pabahy 2000 are very active, as evidenced by the saying, "Kapag nakuha mo ang
boto ng Pabahay 2000, panalo ka na." As the second largest barangay in the entire San Jose del Monte
Bulacan, Pabahay 2000 is very important when it comes to voting in the entire rising city. That`s why
many politicians are courting and persuading people in Pabahay 2000 because they know that if they win
in that barangay, they can win big time. Also, Pbahay 2000 really contributed to the history of San Jose
del Monte a lot because it does show how the improvement and advancement of the rising city impacted
this barangay, from the people to the establishments that are very useful to the people living in it.
The only thing that is needed to improve the said barangay more is to control and prevent its poverty rate.
It may be one of those barangays that has improved a lot, but we cannot deny the fact that there are still
people living there who need a stable job to support their needs and wants. These people are living in the
most ends of the Pabahay 2000; they are usually those who are not yet used to living in the said
barangay. The majority of these people are unemployed or have a job but a low income that does not
allow them to provide the necessary support. They hope that in the future, they can get a barangay where
the low poverty rate is gone, no more unemployed people, and healthy people who are living and
enjoying a much better peace life than they deserve because the people of Pabayay 2000 deserve much
government unit within the province of Bulacan and Central Luzon and the 18th most populated city in the
Philippines. With the coming of recent settlers to San Jose Del Monte, its population increased
tremendously. In the past few years several residential subdivisions have been established here to
accommodate the spilled-over population of Metro Manila. Its proximity to Manila and Quezon City had
made San Jose del Monte an ideal place for a quiet and peaceful living. The place is hilly with a mountain
background, the Sierra Madre that provides a panoramic backdrop to the town. San Jose del Monte
promises to become one of the industrial sites in this part of the province with the way things are going.
As of now, we can say that San Jose del Monte Bulacan has been improving a lot in human resources,
inhabitation, and modern technology, thanks to the three most famous barangays in it (Muzon, Muzon
Heights, and Pabahay 2000). There are still minimal problems that need to be solved, but we know that
the rising city will conquer them just like before. Maybe in many more years, most of the buildings or
infrastructures that are currently seen will be changed into more advanced and improved versions of
them. The sari-sari story that you usually go to will be replaced by a grocery market; a small restaurant
near your house will be changed into something much bigger and fancier; the road you are walking will

to reflect on all the times the rising city used to be. A place of hope, love, and peace. A place you've

Project Proposal: Backtracking the History of San Jose Del Monte Bulacan
Background
What is Backtracking?
Dictionary,2021), It`s an algorithmic technique whose goal is to use brute force to find all solutions to
a [Link] entails gradually compiling a set of all possible solutions. Because a problem will have
constraints, solutions that do not meet them willbe removed. It finds a solution by building a solution
step by step, increasing levels overtime, using recursive calling. A backtracking algorithm uses the
depth-first search method. When the algorithm begins to explore the solutions, the abounding
function is appliedso that the algorithm can determine whether the proposed solutionsatisfies the
constraints. Most Backtracking protocols use the routing header to storehistory information (Science
Direct, 2006).

A Brief Introduction about the History of San Jose del Monte, Bulacan
San Jose del Monte Bulacan has been a very popular part of the entire province, and when we think of a place in

Republic Act No. 8797. It is said to be the largest town in the whole province of Bulacan in terms of land area and population.
Also known as the "Balcony of the Metropolis", it is the first city in the province of Bulacan and recorded as the 86th city of the
Philippines. On December 18, 2003, the City of San Jose became the 1st Lone Congressional District in Bulacan, considering
how it is the most populous part of Bulacan, making it the largest local government unit within the province of Bulacan, Central
Luzon. It is also considered one of the places in Bulacan that can surprise us with a lot of new travel destinations that we are
unaware of. They say that San Jose del Monte, Bulacan, was very rural in the past. A lot of trees and forest spots are in this city.
The majority of the people have lived in the rising city since their birth, as the roads of San Jose del Monte, Bulacan, were not
renovated and were as flat as they are now. It is very slippery due to the mud all over the city, especially when it`s raining. Many
people also say that San Jose del Monte, Bulacan, has a lot of tourist spots that can be compared to the famous travel
destinations of the Philippines. These are the ”Tuntong Falls”, which is considered a fairly easy hike and has a majestic waterfall
that makes you take out your camera for a few snapshots; the “Padre Pio Mountain of Healing”, which has a giant statue of St.

help you to explore and hurdle obstacles together with other people; and many more. To be more specific, "Backtracking the

started, the important events that are very important to the history of it, the past records that indicate how San Jose del Monte
Bulacan was built, the culture they still preserved and gave importance to, and what the Bulakenyos think of the city they grew
up in and still live in. This concept paper will provide an overview of San Jose del Monte Bulacan's history and insights into why it
As we grew older, we were very curious about everything in our surroundings, from the different things we did to the
different places we used to go, but as a human growing in a world full of different things we were unaware of, we tended to
question how the following things in our surroundings were built and made exactly as they are today. In this generation, most
people are forgetting the history of the city they live in. It`s important that there`s someone or something that will remind them
about it. The importance of remembering how their city was built will help them as human beings. A person who knows how their
environment was built and made will be more aware of the things they are surrounded by. As stated in the “Ecological Theory”
proven by Urie Bronfenbrenner, a person is eager to know how their environment was built due to the fact that it affects their
behavior, attitude, belief, the culture they used to, and the way they see themselves as human beings. Also, apart from knowing
the history, We also want to showcase how amazing and adventure-friendly San Jose del Monte Bulacan is, from their beautiful
travel destinations to the culture they have preserved and kept like an oath. We want to show the world, or rather the universe,
that San Jose del Monte Bulacan is not only the largest city in central Luzon but also a city full of amazing and surprising things
that most people aren`t even aware of. We believe that the rising city is not only called the rising city for nothing but for a reason;
the reason behind it is that this city`s places are rising, as are the people who are living in it.
The formulated plan seeks to achieve its general objective of backtracking the history of San Jose del Monte, Bulacan
