Pilot study
Pilot study is a trial study.
Conducted in small scale before the main
study.
Inorder to evaluate feasiblility, duration and
cost/budget.
It is also known as feasibility study.
Definition:A Pilot study is a trial study or rehearsal
study done before conducting an actual study
in small scale manner.
Things to keep in mind while doing a pilot study;
Sample size of a pilot study should be 10 % of
actual study.
Never include sample collected for pilot study in
main study.
Representing or reporting pilot study
Report the data as feasiblility report.
Positive findings are to be reported but
shouldn’t claim as evidence.
Clearly report even small problems that could
occur.
Report possible improvement and suggestions
for the full scale Project.
Reasons for conducting pilot study
Feasiblility of survey
Adequacy of method
Collecting preliminary data
Developing research question and research plan
Appropriatness and quality of instrument
Potencial problems
Project cost
Duration of project
Advantage: -
To Check possibility
To Check problems in research design
To Check problems in sampling
To Check working condition of instrument
Idea of time and cost
Reduce fear of researchers
Provide experience to researchers
Increase efficiency of research
Disadvantage:-
Time consuming process
Lengthy delays in actual research
Wastage of data
