Basic Civil and Mechanical Engineering - Unit 1 Notes & Important Questions
Unit 1: Introduction to Civil Engineering
Civil engineering is a professional engineering discipline that deals with the design, construction,
and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment.
Important Sub-disciplines of Civil Engineering:
- Structural Engineering
- Geotechnical Engineering
- Environmental Engineering
- Water Resources Engineering
- Transportation Engineering
- Construction Engineering
Components of a Building:
1. Foundation - Transfers load to the ground. Types:
- Shallow Foundation (Spread footing, Combined footing)
- Deep Foundation (Pile, Well foundation)
2. Plinth - Above the ground level, supports the superstructure.
3. Superstructure - Part of building above the plinth.
4. Wall - Supports roof and encloses space.
5. Roof - Covers the top of building.
6. Lintel - Horizontal structure above doors/windows.
7. Doors and Windows - For access and light/ventilation.

Structures:
- Load Bearing Structure: Walls bear the load.
- Framed Structure: Beams and columns bear the load.
Types of Buildings (based on use):
- Residential, Commercial, Industrial, Educational, Institutional
Dams:
- Structures built to store water.
Types: Gravity Dam, Earth Dam, Arch Dam
Bridges:
- Structures to cross obstacles like rivers.
