Heating systems

HVAC et al
HVAC
Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) is the use of various technologies to control the
temperature, humidity, and purity of the air in an enclosed space. Its goal is to provide thermal
comfort and acceptable indoor air quality.

other definitions:

HVAC systems normally consist of components to supply, filter, heat, cool and distribute the
conditioned air into targeted interior spaces.

HVACR - refrigeration is sometimes added to the field's abbreviation as or HVACR,

or ventilation is dropped, as in HACR.

Heating systems - boilers are usually used to generate hot water or steam using coal, diesel or
natural gas.
Heat pump – another type of generating heat.

Cooling systems
Chillers are used to produce cool water, which is then pumped to air handling units to cool the
air.
Heating system
A heating system is a complex system which is used to
generate and transfer heat to all heating devices
within a building.
The heating system components are:
• boiler,
• heating devices (to transfer heat to the room areas),
• pipelines (the pipes which transfer heat from the
boiler room to heating devices),
• other equipment
Central heating and space heating
A central heating system provides warmth to the whole interior of a building (or portion of
a building) from one point to multiple rooms.
When combined with other systems in order to control the building climate, the whole
system may be an HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) system.
Central heating is a heating system in which air or water is heated at a central point and
sent through the whole interior of a building via vents or pipes and radiators to provide
warmth in multiple rooms or parts of a building.
Central heat sources can be boilers using oil, gas, biomass or solar heating systems.

Central heating differs from space heating in that the heat generation occurs in one place,
such as a furnace room or basement in a house or a mechanical room in a large building
(though not necessarily at the geometrically "central" point). The heat is distributed
throughout the building, typically by forced-air through ductwork, by water circulating
through pipes, or by steam fed through pipes. The most common method of heat
generation involves the combustion of fossil fuel in a furnace or boiler.

A space heater is a device used to heat a single, small- to medium-sized area. Sources of
power – electricity, fuel combustion. This type of heater can be contrasted with central
heating, which distributes heat to multiple areas.

There are four categories that space heating systems (in-space heaters) generally fall
into;

Wet - water based (hydronic systems)

Dry - warm/forced air systems
Radiant - underfloor heating
Electric storage - heated at cheaper night rate for slow day release generally designed
for localized space heating although central heating units are available. Electric radiant
heaters are also localized heaters.
In the UK economy 7 option means heating hot water for storage or storage heaters at
night or off-peak rate.
You can install a combination of any of these into a building.
The central heating systems discussed on this page refers to hydronic central heating
(water based) systems only.

There are different forms of space heating – floor, ceiling, wall, water heating systems,
infrared heating, air heating, etc.
Heat supply systems
Heat supply systems consist of the following main elements:
- a source of thermal energy,
- a heating network (тепловая сеть)
- consumers inputs (абонентские вводы)

Heat supply systems are classified according to the following criteria:

- source of heat;
- type of heated medium (теплоноситель);
- method of supplying water for hot water supply and heating;
- number of heating network pipelines;
- method of providing consumers with thermal energy, etc.

There are two types of heat supply systems - centralized heat supply
systems (CHS) and decentralized heat supply systems (DHS).
With decentralized heat supply, the heat source and heat consumer are
close to each other. There is no heating network. Decentralized heat
supply is divided into:
- local – местное (heat supply from a local boiler house - от местной
- individual (stove(печь), heat supply from boilers in apartments).

Сentralized heat supply, depending on the degree of centralization can be

divided into four groups:
group - heat supply of a group of buildings;
district - HS of a city district;
urban - city HS ;
intercity – HS of several cities.
The CHS process consists of three operations:
- preparation of the heated medium (HM- теплоноситель) ,
- transport of the HM,
- use of the HM.
HM preparation is carried out at heat treatment units of
thermal power plants (TPP) or boiler houses.
HM transport is carried out via heating networks.
The use of HM is carried out at heat-using installations of
consumers.
A centralized heating system (CHS) is a set of installations
designed for the preparation, transport and use of HM.
Heat load (including heat loss, or heat gain) is the term for the
amount of heating (to compensate heat loss) or cooling (to
compensate heat gain) needed to maintain desired temperature
and humidity in controlled air (e.g., in a structure). Regardless of
how well insulated and sealed a building is, buildings gain heat from
warm air or sunlight or lose heat to cold air and by radiation.
Engineers use heat load calculations to determine the HVAC needs
of the space being cooled or heated.
categories of heat consumption

- низкопотенциальное, с температурой до 150 °С;
- среднепотенциальное, с температурой от 150 ° С до 400 ° С;

There are two main categories of heat consumption.

1) To create comfortable working and living conditions (household/municipal
This includes water consumption for
heating, ventilation, hot water supply, and air conditioning.

2) To produce products of a given quality (technological load -

- низкопотенциальное, с температурой до 150 °С;
- среднепотенциальное, с температурой от 150 ° С до 400 ° С;

According to temperature level, heat is divided into:

- low-potential, with temperatures up to 150 ° C (household load belongs to
this group) ;
- medium potential, with a temperature from 150 ° C to 400 ° C;
- high-potential, with a temperature above 400 ° C.

Municipal (household) load refers to low-potential processes.

The maximum temperature in municipal heating networks does not exceed 150 ° С
(in the forward pipeline), the minimum – 70 ° С (in the return pipeline).

To cover the technological load, water steam with a pressure of up to 1.4 MPa is
usually used.
Heat production units of thermal power plants and boiler houses are used as heat
sources.

The combined heat and power plant (CHP – ТЭЦ) produces combined heat and
electricity based on the heating cycle.
Separate production of heat and electricity is carried out separately in boiler houses
and condensing power plants.
With combined generation (on CHP), the total fuel consumption is lower than with
separate generation.
Heat generating sources classification

Heat generating sources classification

The source is a boiler room, a set of equipment, a boiler plant (BSU).
Boiler installations (котельная установка) is a set of devices designed to generate thermal
energy in the form of hot water or steam.
Boiler installations are classified according to their purpose:
Energetic - supply steam to steam power plants that generate electricity. Usually they are
part of a complex of power plants, which are divided into: condensing power plants (СРР) ,
which generate only electrical energy, and combined heat and power plants (CHP), which
generate electrical and thermal energy.
Heating-industrial – located at industrial enterprises and provide thermal energy (steam)
for production processes and the needs of heating, ventilation and hot water supply.
Heating – designed to supply hot water to the housing and communal sector for the needs
of heating, ventilation and hot water supply.
• отдельностоящие;
• пристроенные к зданиям другого назначения;
• встроенные в здания другого назначения;

Boiler installations are divided into:

- free-standing;
- attached to buildings of another purpose;
- built into buildings of another purpose;
- roof-located

Based on the reliability of heat supply to the consumer, boiler plants are divided into
two categories:
- Category I are boilers that are the only source of heat for heat supply systems (HSS)
and provide category I consumers who do not have a backup heat source.
-Category II – all other boilers.
HSS classification

1. Classification of HSS by type of HM

Depending on the type of heated medium (HM), heating systems can be water (hydronic) or
steam.
Water, as a HM, has a number of advantages over steam. Water can be transported over long
distances without a significant loss of its energy potential (the decrease in water temperature
in large heat supply systems is less than one degree per 1 km of travel). The energy potential
of steam (its pressure) decreases more significantly, averaging 0.1-0.15 MPa per 1 km of route.
Thus, in water heat supply systems, the steam pressure in turbine outlets can be very low
(0.06-0.2 MPa), while in steam heat supply systems it should be up to 1-1.5 MPa. An increase
in steam pressure in the turbine outlet leads to an increase in fuel consumption at the
thermal power plant and a decrease in electricity generation. In addition, water systems allow
at CHP to keep clean the condensate of the steam which is heating water, without expensive
and complex steam converters. In steam systems, condensate is returned to the station
contaminated and incomplete (40-50%), which requires additional costs for its cleaning and
the preparation of additional feed water for boilers.
Hydronic central heating (water based) is the
use of a heat generator commonly called a
boiler (or furnace) to raise the temperature of a
heating medium (HM), generally water.

Hydronics (from Ancient Greek hydro- 'water') is the use of liquid water or gaseous
water (steam) or a water solution (usually glycol with water) as a heat-transfer
medium in heating and cooling systems. The name differentiates such systems
from oil and refrigerant systems.

Historically, in large-scale commercial buildings such as high-rise and campus

facilities, a hydronic system may include both a chilled and a heated water loop, to
provide for both heating and air conditioning.

Water systems :
Cost of connection of local systems to centralized HSS networks - lower for water
systems.
Ability to make centralized regulation of heat supply to consumers by changing water
temperature.
Consumers do not need additional equipment required (which is required for steam
networks : condensate traps, condensate pumps, etc).

Steam systems:
Steam heating systems also have a number of advantages: greater versatility in the
ability to satisfy all types of heat loads; lower energy consumption for pumping the
medium (electricity consumption for pumping condensate is much less than energy
consumption for pumping water); small hydrostatic pressure created by a column of
steam due to its low specific density compared to water.

building and inside the building)

A closed system - the HM gives its energy potential to consumers and returns to the station for its restoration (Fig. 1.1a):

Classification by the method of hot water supply

(for householding - washing, laundry, etc):
Open and Closed
An open system - in which water is heated (in a thermal power plant, district power station,
boiler house) and hot water (for household needs) is taken from the same pipes through
which water flows to heating devices (steel registers, convectors and radiators). As a result
part of heated water that was transported to the building from TPP is discharged (in one-pipe
system – all water finally is discharged).
A closed system is a system in which hot water is prepared already at the heat consumption
facility (apartment building, business center or premises of industrial enterprise) from cold
water using plate heat exchangers.
Open system of
heating and hot
water supply
There are pros and cons to open HSS.
Clear advantages include:
Availability of this system. It is easy to install and maintain. Possibility of quick installation.
There is no need to purchase additional equipment for heating water.
Long service life of heating devices and pipes due to the high quality of the HM.

However, the open HSS still has more disadvantages:

High cost of centralized hot water preparation.
The quality of the HM must meet the requirements for drinking water. In practice, it often turns out that
the water in consumers’ taps does not meet these requirements. Due to the presence of traces of fuels
and lubricants, rust and chemical impurities, it can be harmful and have an unpleasant odor.
Substances with a low crystallization temperature cannot be used as a HM.
It is prohibited to add chemical reagents to HSS.
There is a need for automatic and continuous replenishment of the HM due to its selection by hot water
consumers.
Due to a single circuit, during service or repair, consumers are deprived of not only heating, but also hot
water (closed-type systems can be easily repaired in the summer).
In the warm season, more resources than necessary are used to ensure the functioning of the hot water
supply system.
It was due to the presence of such significant shortcomings in Russia that the decision was made to
abandon open-type HSS.
The main disadvantage of a closed HSS is the significant capital costs for its creation and repair. Due to
the use of special equipment for heating water, the design of such a system becomes technically more
complex and involves the use of a larger number of communications.
Two-pipe heating systems: a – closed; b - open
a) Open and b) closed 2-pipe systems

Slightly different classification:

Closed – as it was meant before

Semi-closed system - the consumer uses not only heat, but also the HM itself, and the
rest of the HM returns to the source.

In an open heating system, the entire HM is completely used by the consumer.

CHP

One-pipe open system (no return of HM to the CHP)

Another meaning for closed and
open heating systems – by the
construction of the circuits
(contact with atmosphere)
Sealed (closed) system - A heating system that is closed to the atmosphere and
does not have a feed and expansion tank. It is completely sealed, and hence not
affected by atmospheric pressure.
Sealed systems will use a pressurisation unit to provide automatic replacement of
water losses and ensure minimum head requirements are maintained. A
dedicated expansion vessel will also need to be installed to deal with the effects of
heating fluid expansion and contraction that will occur as the heating fluid
temperature changes across the entire operating temperature range of the sealed
heating system.

Open vented (open loop) system - is one in which a part of the piping circuitry
contains a reservoir that is open to the atmosphere (for HVAC- such as a cooling
tower or pond, air washer, open storage tank, an open-type expansion tank).
In heating systems it is a system with a feed and expansion tank (open-type).
To accommodate water losses from evaporation or leakage in the system the tank water
level is maintained and topped up automatically using a float valve in the tank connected to
the mains supply. Expanded water is also accommodated within the open expansion tank.
The system pressure or head is achieved through the height of the tank location above the
plant room.
Feed and expansion tanks are typically installed in roof voids and the height of the tank
above the boilers must satisfy minimum operating pressure for the installed boiler and have
sufficient height above the highest point of the circulating system.

The closed-type expansion tank is a durable, sealed

vessel, the internal volume of which is divided into
two parts by a membrane. One part is filled with air,
the second is connected to the pipeline. When
heated, the HM, increasing in volume, pushes the
membrane towards the air chamber, which plays the
role of a damper. As the water cools, the hydraulic
pressure decreases and the compressed air balances
the system, pressing out excess water back into the
pipeline. All closed-type expansion tanks are
equipped with an air valve. In emergency mode, In a closed system

destruction.

According to the method of connecting of the network to the local

heating systems:
dependent and independent (зависимые и независимые)
Dependent connection schemes - the HM enters the heating systems directly from the heat
supply networks (Fig. 1.5a). As a result, the pressure in local heating systems is determined
by the pressure regime in external heat supply networks.
Independent connection schemes - the HM from the heat supply network enters the heater
(heat exchanger), in which its heat is used to heat the water that fills the local heating
system. In this case, the network water and the water in the local heating system are
separated by a heating surface (in heat exchanger) and thus the network and the heating
system are hydraulically isolated from each other.

Dependent heat supply systems are systems in which the HM through a pipeline enters directly into the
consumer’s heating system. There are no intermediate heat exchangers, heating points or hydraulic
insulation. This connection is understandable and structurally simple. It is easy to maintain and does not
require any additional equipment, for example, circulation pumps, automatic regulation and control
devices, heat exchangers, etc. Most often, this system attracts with its, at first glance, cost-effectiveness.
However, it has a significant drawback - the inability to regulate heat supply at the beginning and end of the
heating season, when excess heat appears. This not only affects the comfort of the consumer, but also
leads to heat loss, which reduces its initially apparent efficiency.
Independent heat supply systems are systems in which the heating equipment of consumers is
hydraulically isolated from the heat supply, and additional heat exchangers of central heating points are
used to deliver heat to consumers. Advantages: the ability to regulate the amount of heat delivered to the
consumer by regulating the secondary HM; its higher reliability; energy-saving effect, with such a system
heat savings are 10-40%; it becomes possible to improve the operational and technical qualities of the HM,
which significantly increases the protection of boiler installations from contamination.
Thanks to these advantages, independent heat supply systems have become actively used in large cities,
where heating networks are extensive and there is a large variation in heat loads.
Currently, technologies for reconstructing dependent systems into independent ones have been developed
and are being successfully implemented. Despite significant investment, this ultimately has its effect.
Naturally, an independent open system is more expensive, but it significantly improves the quality of water
compared to a dependent one.

Dependent local heating systems are used in conditions where the pressure in
the heating networks does not exceed the strength of the heating devices (0.6
MPa for cast iron radiators; 1.0 MPa for steel convectors).

Three dependent schemes are used:

- without mixing;
- with elevator;
- with mixing pump.

Mixing – means mixing of HM with cooled water in return pipe

Dependent circuits can be used when the water pressure in heating networks is
not more than 6 atm.
In district heat supply systems operating on temperature regime (supply/return) of
130/70 °С or 150/70 °С at low outside air temperatures (tнв), the temperature of
network water in the supply line of the heating network tв > 95 °С, therefore, special
mixing devices should be provided at the heating point (тепловой пункт - TП) to
reduce water temperature before the building heating system.

Mixing devices:
- elevator; - элеватор
- mixing pumps; - смесительные насосы.

Special calculations (not shown here) are done for mixing devices to
provide needed temperature in the network of the building.
Now elevators are substituted by mixing pumps.
Water enters the building input at temperature t1 (t3 < t1).
The operating principle of the elevator is using water energy from the supply pipeline. Working
water with pressure P1 acquires significant velocity at the exit from the nozzle (сопло - K), its
static pressure becomes less than the pressure in the return line P2, as a result of which the
return water is sucked in by a stream of working water. (A vacuum must be created at the
outlet of the nozzle, then the HM in the amount of Gп with a temperature t2,0 will be sucked
into the pipe. ) In the mixing chamber (КС), the water speed is equalized and the pressure is
constant; in the diffuser (Д), the mixed flow velocity decreases as its cross-section increases,
and the static water pressure increases to P3 > P2.
For normal operation of the elevator, the pressure drop at the building input must be
maintained within the range P = 15 - 18 mm H2O.

If there is no required pressure drop at the user input for installing an elevator, then
a mixing pump is installed as a mixing device. Pump installation condition: t3 < t1.

Disadvantage of the scheme: the operation of centrifugal pumps is accompanied by

vibration and noise, therefore the installation of mixing pump in residential buildings
is abandoned. As a rule, mixing pumps are installed at heating points (тепловые
пункты): at heating point (ИТП) , if it is in a separate building, ЦТП, КТП.

Three- pipe system

Three-pipe heat supply systems are used for industrial enterprises with constant
water consumption for technological needs. These systems have two supply pipes.
One of them supplies water at a constant temperature for technological needs and
hot water supply, the other - water at a variable temperature, used for heating and
ventilation needs. Cooled water from all local systems is returned to the thermal
power plant through a common pipeline.

Three-pipe heat supply systems are used for industrial enterprises with constant water
consumption for technological needs. These systems have two supply pipes. One of
them (T11) supplies water at a constant temperature for technological needs and hot
water supply, the other (T12) water at a variable temperature, used for heating and
ventilation needs. Cooled water from all local systems is returned to the thermal power
plant through a common pipeline (T2).

Four-pipe heat supply systems are used only in small systems due to their high metal
consumption.
Four-pipe system is the most reliable
Four-pipe system

In this case, water for hot water supply is prepared at the source (CHP- ТЭЦ) and
supplied to the consumer through a separate pipe (T3) . The consumer does not have
own heaters, and recirculated water is returned to the source for heating (T4). The
other two pipes supply (T1 - flow, подача) and discharge water (T2 - return, обратка)
for heating and ventilation systems.

Classified by flow generation, hydronic heating systems may
be
1) gravity systems (гравитационные или самотечные), which
use the difference in density between the supply (подача) and
return (обратка) water columns of a circuit or system to
circulate water;
Gravity systems are seldom used today.

2) forced systems (с принудительной циркуляцией), in which

a pump, usually driven by an electric motor, maintains flow.

Water systems can be either once-through (проточная) or

recirculating systems (рециркулирующая).

Gravity systems

Acceleration part of pipe – from boiler to the expansion tank. Feeding starts from the high
point, at least 1,5 m higher than the radiators.
Location of the boiler – at least 0,5m lower than the pipe from radiators.
Horizontal pipes diameters are bigger near the boiler. The circulating pressure must overcome
the pipe friction losses, so large pipe cross-sections are necessary to decrease it.
Slope of pipes (feed – 0,005-0,002) – to release air from pipe to the expansion tank.
Risers and downcomers should be installed as straight as possible and had a short and
horizontal connection to the radiators.

Gravity systems are applied in single buildings not higher than 3 storeys. With a large length
of circulation rings (>30m), and, consequently, with significant resistance to the movement
of water in them, the calculated diameters of the pipelines turn out to be very large and the
heating system turns out to be economically unprofitable both in terms of initial costs and
during exploitation. Application of natural circulation systems is limited to isolated civil
buildings, where noise and vibration are unacceptable, apartment heating, and the upper
(technical) storeys of tall buildings.

The advantages of a single-pipe heating system:
hydrodynamic stability, ease of design and installation,
low costs of materials and funds (only one НМ line is
One-pipe
required). Increased water pressure will ensure normal
natural circulation. The use of antifreeze increases the
efficiency of the system. Although this is not the best
example of a heating system, it has become very
widespread in Russia due to the high savings in material.
Disadvantages of a single-pipe heating system: complex thermal and hydraulic calculations of
the network; it is difficult to eliminate errors in the calculations of heating devices;
interdependence of the operation of all network elements; high hydrodynamic resistance;
limited number of heating devices on one riser; inability to regulate the flow of HM into
individual heating devices; high heat loss.
Improvement of single-pipe heating systems. A technical solution has been developed that
allows you to regulate the operation of individual heating devices connected to one pipe.
Special closing sections - bypasses - are connected to the network. The bypass is a jumper in
the form of a piece of pipe that connects the direct pipe of the heating radiator and the
return pipe. It is equipped with taps or valves. The bypass makes it possible to connect
automatic thermostats to the radiator. This allows to regulate the temperature of each
radiator and, if necessary, shut off the HM supply to any individual heating device. Thanks to
this, it is possible to repair and replace individual devices without completely shutting down
the entire heating system. Correctly connecting the bypass makes it possible to redirect the
flow of HM through the riser, bypassing the element being replaced or repaired.

- однотрубные с последовательным соединением приборов;

- двухтрубные с параллельным соединением приборов;

вторых их половин;

A modern heating system is a complex of various devices, and for its effective operation it requires the balanced
functioning of all elements. Achieving this is very difficult, given the complexity and ramification of the system, the large
number of both consumers differing in the intensity of the heat load, and individual circuits that can be equipped with
individual control devices, and also taking into account the variety of units involved that mutually influence each other
The hydraulic separator is a hydraulic distributor. It divides (separates, removes) the influence of pressure and flow from
one ring to another. Due to the fact that the hydraulic resistance in the hydraulic arrow is very small, a reduction in
influence is achieved. The influence is so small that it makes no sense to calculate it. That is, the influence of the primary
ring pump does not affect changes in pressure and flow of the secondary ring and vice versa. Other than that, no magic
happens there.

Several “no”s in cottage heating system.

- Do not use polypropylene pipes – use only metal-plastic pipes!

Metal prevents diffusion of O2 into HM and decreases formation
of rust and microbial growth in the system.

- Always strive to fill heating systems and add (if needed) into
them deaerated water (special reagents are used)

- Do not use ball valves for flow regulation. Ball valves are designed
only be in closed or open position. In the intermediate position
they can stuck and remain forever. Use special valves.

- For thermal elongation of pipes compensators are needed.
