FAST MAKE-UP, HIGH-PERFORMANCE CONNECTORS
The connectors described in this catalogue are designed for use offshore and onshore, where rig
costs and environmental conditions dictate a need for fast connector make-up combined with
superior performance. Oil States Industries connectors have been proven in drilling, production
and structural applications throughout the world, for the last 40 years.
This catalogue presents brief descriptions for the full line of Oil States connectors, with typical
mechanical specifications. For the most up-to-date technical information and running procedures
please contact Oil States.
Field Services
Oil States Industries provide a full turnkey installation of all connectors described in this catalogue,
including connector assembly, hammering, casing cutting and installation of protection sleeves.
Quality Manufacturing
Oil States Industries connectors are manufactured to the highest industry standards to assure
you of trouble-free installation and service. Following are highlights of our manufacturing quality
programme.
• Our manufacturing facility is registered to ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 18001 & API Q1.
• We have the capability to machine components up to 67 inches in diameter and 69 inches tall,
weighing 12 tonnes, while maintaining tolerances of 0.0002 inches.
• All forgings purchased with either BSEN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 certification, subject to client
requirements.
• Critical dimensions of all connectors are verified with Coordinate Measuring Machines.
• Every component receives a unique serial number that is cross-referenced with certification,
supplier, cast number and ring within the cast.
• An alignment check during welding onto pipe aligns the axis of the pin to the axis of the box to
within 0.050 degrees.
• All connectors are phosphated to prevent corrosion and galling.
• The latest two-and three-dimensional finite element analysis (FEA) techniques are used to
evaluate connector designs.
• Oil States utilises our in house UKAS accredited testing laboratory to carry out full scale testing.

MMR
The mudline makeup and release (MMR) is a fast-makeup
connector that has been used in operations around
the world. The MMR is designed to incorporate large
load-bearing faces so that it is suitable for piling
operations. The breech lock connection features 1/3
turn make-up. Once drilling operations have ceased and
disconnection is required, torque is applied to the string
which actuates the shear pins in the connector to allow
retrieval. There is no requirement for umbilical lines back
to surface or ROV intervention the connection is purely
mechanical.
The interfaces on the MMR box allow you to tie back onto
the connector at a later date with a stab-in pin which
requires no tools for assembly and is secured with an
external lock-ring. The MMR tie-back tool requires no
MMR
torque to engage, is purely weight set and features the
field proven technology from our Lynx™ connector suite.

RISER, DRILLING & PRODUCTION SYSTEMS
Standard Connectors
Merlin™
Merlin™ connectors combine superior static strength
and fatigue life with fast, non-rotational make-up and an
extremely slim profile; a Merlin™ connector typically has
a cross-sectional wall thickness of only 1.5 inches. These
connectors have been used in sizes up to 72 inches OD
and for applications including open-hole and tieback
casing, conductors, structural tubulars, pipeline risers and
TLP Tendons. The Merlin™ S is the slim line version, the
Merlin™ D and HD are drivable models and the Merlin™ R
is for use with riser applications. The Merlin™ Tension Leg
Element (TLE) is also available for extreme axial fatigue
conditions.

The connector incorporates four metal-to-metal seals and
also internal and external abutment faces, which ensure
pile fatigue is minimised through the teeth. This enables
the connector to have high-in place fatigue performance
even after piling.

Design Merlin™ R Connectors for Workover
The Merlin™ R connection system has been designed Risers
and manufactured to meet a range of static, fatigue and Merlin™ R workover riser connectors are designed to meet
pressure loads (up to 20,000 psi). Sizes range from 6 5/8” a range of static and fatigue stresses compatible with ISO
to 25”. As with all Merlin™ connectors, the high pressure 13628-7. All the design features of the TLE connectors are
riser Merlin™ incorporates non-helical interlocking teeth present, together with a number of additional capabili-
which, because of the design geometry, ensure that the ties; the connector can be machined directly onto upset
connector pin and box can only be mated in one precise riser pipe, with the facility to perform “re-cuts” of the
configuration. The connection is assembled in a maximum connector, should damage occur in service. The interface
time of 3 minutes using an Oil States supplied hydraulic profile between pin and box has been improved to allow
clamp and air operated power pack. the full combined pin/ box thickness to be mobilised when
resisting riser internal pressure.
Features
• Non helical tooth profile Testing
Extensive testing has been carried out on the Merlin™ to
• Non rotational make-up
include internal gas pressure, external water pressure,
• Four metal-to-metal seals tension, axial fatigue, bending fatigue, corrosion
