RAILNET
• RAILNET is the name of the Corporate Wide
Information System (CWIS) of Indian Railway.
• It provides computer connectivity between Railway
board, Zonal Railways, Divisions, production units, CTIs
Objectives:
• Information on demand. Transferring of files
electronically, quickly and efficiently instead of paper
documents
• Internet facility. Internet gateways have been established
at Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata.
• E-Mail facility. Official E-mail IDs are provided by
establishing the E-Mail servers

RAILNET
• Hosting of Internet website of corresponding
Railways since internet facility is provided
• Peer to peer network and client-server architecture
Rail net users can access each other by sharing their
resources. Departments can maintain their own
intranet servers individually for their users.
RAILNET
• Initially, Railnet phase-I was commissioned by IRCOT
(Indian Railway Central Organization of Telecom)
• This phase connects the zonal headquarters of
WR,ER,SR,NR to the Railway Board. The other zonal
HQs and production units are connected to nearest
zonal HQs which are already connected to Railway
Board. E.g. SCR is connected to SR.
• In the phase-II, Divisions are connected with their zonal
HQs and all centralized training institutes i.e. RSC,
IRISET, IRICEN,IRIMEE, IRIEEN and Railway
organizations RDSO, CORE and METRO Railways are
connected to Railnet from the nearest zonal HQ.
RAILNET-Phase-I &II

Guidelines to ensure uniformity
– RAILNET will be setup on MPLS network of
RailTel as an MPLS based VPN.
– All the RAILNET locations viz., zonal Railways,
Divisions, CTIs, PUs etc. will be connected to the
MPLS network of RailTel using 2 MBPS links
preferably on Ethernet with a provision of
upgrading it in near future.
– Railway Board will be connected to the MPLS
network with 10MBPS link to start with.
