Overview of Reproduction Methods

Reproduction is the process by which new organisms of the same species are formed, occurring through asexual or sexual methods. Asexual reproduction involves processes like binary fission and budding, while sexual reproduction includes gamete formation and fertilization, with specific mechanisms in plants and humans. Modern technology has introduced methods such as IVF and surrogacy to assist childless couples in having children.

Reproduction Notes

Introduction
Formation of new organisms of same species by earlier existing organism is called as reproduction.
It is one of the important characteristics of living organisms and is essential for the evolution of
species. Reproduction mainly occurs by two methods: Asexual and Sexual reproduction.

Asexual Reproduction
- New organism formed without gametes.
- Fast process but lacks genetic variation.

Binary Fission: Parent cell divides to form two similar cells (e.g., Protists).
Multiple Fission: Many nuclei in a cyst divide, followed by cytoplasmic division (e.g., Amoeba).
Budding in Yeast: A bud grows and detaches as a new cell.
Fragmentation: Parent breaks into parts that grow into new organisms (e.g., Spirogyra).
Regeneration: Each part regenerates missing parts (e.g., Planaria).
Budding in Hydra: Outgrowth forms a new Hydra.
Vegetative Propagation: Reproduction by root, stem, leaf (e.g., Bryophyllum).
Spore Formation: Sporangia release spores in fungi like Mucor.

Sexual Reproduction
- Involves fusion of male and female gametes.
- Two main processes: Gamete formation (by meiosis) and Fertilization (forms zygote).

In Plants:
- Flower has calyx, corolla, androecium (male), and gynoecium (female).
- Pollination transfers pollen to stigma.
- Fertilization leads to zygote and endosperm formation (double fertilization).

In Humans:
- Male system: Testes produce sperms, travel through ducts, semen ejaculated via penis.
- Female system: Ovaries release ova, fertilization in oviduct, zygote implants in uterus.
- Pregnancy lasts ~9 months, placenta supplies nutrients.

Menstrual Cycle
- Happens every 2830 days, controlled by FSH, LH, Estrogen, and Progesterone.
- FSH helps follicle grow and produce estrogen.
- LH triggers ovulation.
- Corpus luteum produces progesterone to maintain endometrium.
- If no fertilization, endometrium breaks down = menstruation (5 days).

Reproduction & Modern Technology

- Childless couples can now have children using IVF, Surrogacy, and Sperm Banks.
- IVF: Fertilization outside body and embryo is implanted at the right time.
