FULL MANUAL RCC BUILDING DESIGN AND LOAD CALCULATION

1. PROJECT OVERVIEW:

• Building Type: High-Rise (Residential/Commercial Worst Case)

• No. of Floors: G+10
• Wall Thickness: 230 mm
• Location: Critical (Seismic Zone V, Wind Speed 50 m/s assumed)

2. LOAD CALCULATIONS:

2.1 DEAD LOAD (DL):

• Slab (RCC 150 mm thick): 0.15 x 25 = 3.75 kN/m²

• Floor Finish: 1.0 kN/m²
• Ceiling Plaster: 0.5 kN/m²
• Wall Load (230 mm thick, 3 m height):
• Load = Thickness × Height × Unit Weight = 0.23 × 3 × 20 = 13.8 kN/m (per meter length of wall)

2.2 LIVE LOAD (LL):

• Residential Building: 2.0 kN/m² (as per IS 875 Part 2)

2.3 WIND LOAD (WL):

• Basic Wind Speed (V): 50 m/s

• Design Wind Pressure (Pz):
• Formula: Pz = 0.6 × V² = 0.6 × 50² = 1500 N/m² = 1.5 kN/m²
• Apply to elevation area depending on height zones (as per IS 875 Part 3)

2.4 EARTHQUAKE LOAD (EQ):

• Zone: V, Zone factor (Z): 0.36

• Importance factor (I): 1.0
• Response Reduction factor (R): 5 (SMRF)
• Soil type: Medium (Sa/g = 2.5)
• Design Base Shear (Vb):
• Formula: Vb = (Z × I × Sa) / (R × g) × W

3. STRUCTURAL MEMBER DESIGN CALCULATIONS

3.1 SLAB DESIGN:

• Assume One-way slab, Span = 3 m

• Total Load (w): DL + LL = 4.75 + 2 = 6.75 kN/m²
• Moment (Mu):
• Formula: Mu = wL²/8 = (6.75 × 3²)/8 = 7.59 kNm
• Use M25 concrete, Fe500 steel
• Effective depth (d): 125 mm,
• Ast Calculation (Using Mu = 0.87 fy Ast d [1 - (Ast fy) / (fck bd)]): Provide Ast = 470 mm²/m

3.2 BEAM DESIGN:

• Span = 4 m, Load = 20 kN/m

• Mu = wL²/8 = (20 × 4²)/8 = 40 kNm
• Use 230 x 450 mm beam
• Use Limit State Method:
• Mu = 0.138 fck b d²
• Solving for d, Ast from Mu = 0.87 fy Ast d...
• Provide 3 x 16 mm bars

3.3 COLUMN DESIGN:

• Axial Load = 350 kN

• Assume 300 x 600 mm column
• Pu = 0.4 fck Ac + 0.67 fy Asc
• Solve for reinforcement, provide 8 x 20 mm bars

3.4 FOOTING DESIGN:

• Load = 500 kN, SBC = 200 kN/m²

• Area = Load/SBC = 2.5 m² → Provide 1.6 x 1.6 m
• Check for One-way Shear: V = wu L/2, τv = V / bd
• Check for Two-way Shear (Punching): τv = V / (b0 × d)

3.5 STAIRCASE DESIGN:

• Tread = 250 mm, Riser = 150 mm

• Slope = √(250² + 150²) = 291 mm (waist length)
• Waist Slab Thickness = 180 mm
• Load = Self-weight + Finish + LL = ~6 kN/m²
• Moment = wL²/8 → Design for bending

4. SEISMIC DETAILING:

• As per IS 13920

2
• 135° hooks for stirrups
• Close spacing at joints
• Lap length away from critical zones

5. BBS & QUANTITY ESTIMATION:
