ANALYSIS OF BOREHOLE WATER QUALITY IN GIDAN

KWANO

BADMUS SHERIFF OLALEKAN

DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING, FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY, MINNA.

PROBLEM STATEMENT
Availability of clean and safe drinking water is essential for human health and well-
being, yet many communities in Minna, especially here in Gidan Kwano rely on
borehole water without adequate assessment of its quality. Despite being a crucial
water source, borehole water is susceptible to contamination from both natural and
anthropogenic activities, including agricultural runoff, industrial waste discharge,
poor sanitation practices, and geological factors. The lack of regular monitoring
and quality assessment raises concerns about the presence of harmful physical,
chemical, and microbiological contaminants, such as heavy metals, nitrates, and
pathogenic bacteria.

The absence of systematic monitoring and regulatory bodies here in Gidan Kwano
further exacerbates the problem, making it difficult to ensure that borehole water
meets national and international water quality standards. Additionally,
socioeconomic factors, such as poverty and inadequate infrastructure, hinder the
implementation of effective water management strategies.

Intensive agricultural activities around Gidan Kwano, high levels of nitrates from
fertilizers may leach into groundwater, posing a threat to human health,
particularly for infants and pregnant women. Similarly, improper waste disposal
can contribute to the accumulation of toxic substances in borehole water, further
emphasizing the need for continuous monitoring and preventive measures.
AIM
To assess whether the borehole water in Gidan Kwano is safe for human
consumption by evaluating its physical, chemical and biological parameters against
established standards, thereby identifying potential contaminants and ensuring the
water quality meets health guidelines.

OBJECTIVES
The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the quality of borehole water in
Gidan Kwano to determine its suitability for drinking and domestic use. This will
be achieved through a comprehensive analysis of various physical, chemical, and
biological parameters to identify potential contaminants and assess compliance
with established water quality standards, such as those set by the World Health
Organization (WHO).
1. To collect borehole water samples from designated locations for analysis.
2. To examine the physical characteristics of the water, including turbidity, color,
odor, and temperature.
3. To analyze the chemical composition of the water, focusing on parameters such
as pH, conductivity, total dissolved solids (TDS), alkalinity, hardness, and the
presence of specific ions (e.g., fluoride, nitrate, chloride).
4. To conduct a bacteriological analysis to determine the presence of microbial
contaminants, including total bacterial count and coliform bacteria.
5. To compare the measured water quality parameters against national and
international standards to assess compliance and suitability for consumption.
By achieving these objectives, this study aims to provide valuable insights into
borehole water quality.

Socioeconomic factors such as poverty and inadequate infrastructure hinder effective water management in Gidan Kwano. These issues can limit the resources available for regular monitoring and quality assessment of borehole water, making it challenging to ensure compliance with water quality standards and implement sustainable water management strategies .

Nitrate contamination in groundwater can pose significant health risks, particularly to infants and pregnant women. High levels of nitrates can cause methemoglobinemia or 'blue baby syndrome' in infants, reducing the blood's ability to carry oxygen, which is particularly dangerous for young children and fetal development .

Community awareness can enhance borehole water quality by encouraging local participation in regular monitoring efforts and promoting practices that prevent contamination. Education can empower individuals with knowledge about contaminants and safe hygiene practices, increasing demand for better water management policies and accountability .

Challenges in comparing local borehole water quality with standards include potential variations in water source conditions, differences in testing methodologies, and the absence of consistent regulatory frameworks. Additionally, the economic constraints and technical limitations within the community may prevent adherence to comprehensive guidelines like those from the WHO .

Physical characteristics like turbidity and color are indicators of potential water quality issues because they suggest the presence of suspended particles and possible contamination. High turbidity can indicate elevated levels of microorganisms or pollutants, while unusual colors could suggest chemical contamination from industrial waste or natural minerals in excessive concentrations .

The primary factors contributing to contamination include agricultural runoff, industrial waste discharge, poor sanitation practices, and geological factors. Intensive agricultural activities contribute high levels of nitrates from fertilizers which may leach into groundwater. Additionally, improper waste disposal can lead to the accumulation of toxic substances in borehole water .

Strategies to improve water quality in Gidan Kwano include establishing regular monitoring and quality assessment programs to detect contaminants, promoting better agricultural practices to reduce runoff, enhancing waste management systems to prevent toxic accumulation, and ensuring the enforcement of water quality standards through an effective regulatory framework .

Agricultural activities around Gidan Kwano contribute to water contamination through runoff that carries fertilizers and pesticides into the groundwater, increasing nitrate levels. Possible solutions include using controlled fertilization techniques, creating buffer zones to absorb runoff, and introducing crop rotation practices that naturally rejuvenate soil quality .

The absence of regulatory bodies exacerbates issues with borehole water safety in Gidan Kwano by making systematic monitoring difficult. Without regulation, it is challenging to ensure that the water meets national and international quality standards, potentially leaving harmful contaminants unchecked .

Preventive measures against microbial contamination in borehole water include regular bacterial testing, ensuring proper sanitation around water sources, sealing boreholes adequately to prevent surface contamination, and implementing community health education programs to promote safe water handling and usage .
