UZBEKISTAN – TOP PLACES TO VISIT
Uzbekistan is one of the fascinating countries in Central Asia and famous for its Silk
Road cities of Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva. Twice the size of the UK, it has a rich
cultural heritage and a long history steeped in tradition. You won’t be surprised to
learn that it is home to four significant UNESCO World Heritage sites and
six UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage listings. Another thirty are waiting in the
wings on the Tentative List. From such a rich list of important places to visit, things
to do and an enormous variety of sightseeing tours on offer, we present you with
our pick of Uzbekistan Travel – Top 10 Places to Visit:

111
1 SAMARKAND
“Samarkand – Crossroad of Cultures” is the official moniker used to describe this
city as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Samarkand conjures up images of ancient
times and sounds almost mythical. However, this is no fairytale: Samarkand today
is a lively city that cherishes its traditions. Archaeological excavations have
revealed a history which dates back 3500 years; the town of Afrosiab was founded
in the 7th century BC. The area was continuously inhabited and served as a melting
pot of diverse cultures. It was conquered by Alexander the Great and Genghis
Khan, was the sumptuous capital of the Timurid Empire and played an important
role in the development of Islamic architecture and arts. You won’t want to miss
Registan square, the Bibi Khanum and Gur Emir Mausoleums, the Shah-i-Zinda
complex, Afrosiab & the Ulughbek Observatory.

#2 BUKHARA
The historic center of Bukhara has been an important base for Islamic theology and
science for several centuries. Its well-preserved city center was recognized by
UNESCO as an exemplary medieval city. City-planning, urban, economic, and
scientific development in Bukhara had a large impact on the Islamic World in the
Middle Ages. The earliest architectural monument is the tomb of Ismail Somoni
112
dating back to the 10th century. For seven centuries up until the 16 th century, it was
the largest Islamic center for the study of Sufism with hundreds of mosques and
madrasas or learning places. World-renowned scholar Avicenna was born near
Bukhara and grew up there. While in Bukhara we’d recommend taking a stroll
around the old city to savor its architectural legacy and imagine yourself bargaining
as they would have done in medieval times.

#3 KHIVA
Khiva is the first UNESCO World Heritage site in Uzbekistan was inscribed in 1990
noting its importance in the exceptional heritage of ancient Silk Road traditions.
Itchan Kala, which literally translates as the inner part of the old city, is surrounded
by thick mud walls. It contains 51 monuments and is although around 250
households still make their home inside, it feels more like an open-air museum.
Looking down from Islam Khoja minaret or the city walls, it’s hard to imagine this is
the 21st century. It is here in Khiva that the scholar AI-Khoresmi, the father of
algebra, was born and introduced algorithms to the world. Take a guided tour to
get to know the stories that feature in the history of this fascinating city.

In each city there lived a man who with his way of life and actions was setting an
example of true devoted service. The man who made his faith an integral part of
his own life. It could be either a well-known state or public figure like Alisher
Navoi, or simply a worker, an artisan who embodied virtue just with his own
everyday life. During his life, or after leaving the world, such person became a
saint. The place of his residence and burial, as a rule, became an object of
reverence, which preserved the spirit of an amazing man and the memory of him.
Pilgrimage tourism in Uzbekistan occupies a special place, as the appropriate
conditions for this were historically formed here.

120
Shrines of Tashkent
The Khast Imam Complex (Khazrati Imam) ) is one of the most significant
treasures of Tashkent, the religious heart of the capital. It formed near the grave of
the great saint, the first imam of Tashkent – Abu Bakr Muhammad Kaffal Shashi.
One of the oldest Qurans is located here - the Quran of the third of the righteous
caliphs - Osman.
The complex consists of the following structures, each of which has its own history
and is associated with these or other people and events:
- Madrasa of Barak Khan;
- The Tilla Sheikh Mosque;
- Madrasa of Caffal-Shashi;
- Museum of the Qurans;
- Juma Mosque of Khoja Ahrar Vali.
Another important place of pilgrimage is the Zangi-ata Mausoleum, a Muslim
shrine located near Tashkent. Zangi-ata is a famous preacher of Islam in Central
Asia, a major follower of Sheikh Ahmad Yassawi, the founder of the Yasaviyya
Order.
Shrines of Samarkand
Three shrines of Samarkand, visiting of which in one day is equivalent to the
making of a small Hajj:
- Memorial complex of Imam Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Ismail Al-Bukhari, a
legendary theologian, collector of hadith. It was built around the place of his burial
in 1997-98 in honor of the 1225th anniversary of his birth;
- Shakhi-Zinda is a whole ensemble of family vaults, storing the remains of
representatives of the Samarkand nobility and members of the royal family - the
family of Amir Temur. It is located not far from the legendary Afrosiab settlement.
It includes a number of mausoleums of the late Middle Ages;
- Mausoleum of Ruhabad, built at the order of Amir Timur, where the remains of
Sheikh Burkhaneddin Sagardji are buries. He was deeply respected by Timur, and
also was a religious figure at the Chinese court.
121
Also in Samarkand, you will find the Mausoleum of Khoja Donier (Saint Daniel),
the biblical prophet of the Old Testament times, that is praised in three world
religions - Judaism, Christianity and Islam.
The settlement of Katta Langar is located not far from Samarkand. Its history is
connected with the life of Sufi Muhammad Sadyk and Sufi brotherhood called
"Ishkia". The rags of the prophet Muhammad, according to legend, were kept in
the settlement of Katta Langar.
Shrines of Bukhara
The sacred Bukhara for a long time was one of the centers of the Muslim religion.
Many outstanding religious figures of many countries studied here.
In the suburbs of Bukhara there is the memorial complex of Bahautdin
Naqshbandi, the sheikh of the "Naqshbandiya" Sufi order, one of the most famous
Sufi brotherhoods.
Moreover, many people know of such a shrine as the Poi-Kalon Ensemble ("The
Pedestal of the Great"), which occupies one of the most important places in the
religious history of the city. The ensemble consists of Kalyan minaret, Kalyan
mosque and Miri-Arab madrasah.
Among other famous shrines are:
- Bolo Haouz mosque;
- Magoki-Attori Mosque;
- Ensemble of Kosh-Madrasa;
- Mausoleum of the Samanid dynasty;
- The mausoleum of Chashma Ayub ("The Springs of Job") is a shrine that is
worshiped by both Christians and Muslims;
- Chor Minor ("Four minarets").
Here, in Bukhara, still exists an equally interesting part of the city - the Jewish
Quarter. The history of Central Asian Jews is lost in time. They are a special sub
ethnos, whose representatives remains very few today. The entrance to the Jewish
quarter is located near the Lyabi-Khauz ensemble. The old quarter is divided into
three parts: The Old and New Mahalla, and Amirabad. Two synagogues, as well as
a Jewish cemetery is situated here.
Buddhist shrines of Termez
Long before the coming of the conquering Arabs and the proclamation of Islam,
and long before it reached China and Japan, the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama,
called the Buddha - "enlightened", found their followers in the ancient city of
Tarmit (Termez) at the territory of the ancient state of Bactria. During the
archaeological excavations on this and nearby territories, many Buddhist
monuments were found. The most famous to this day are: Stupa of Zurmala (or
the Tower of Zurmala) is a twelve-meter building, a preserved monument of the
Kushan era; and the monasteries of Karatepa ("Black Hill") and Fayaztepa.
These are the whole temple complexes located in the middle of a desert area and
are of a special interest both for lovers of history and culture, and for
representatives of Buddhism who come to Uzbekistan every year to visit these
ancient shrines.

Type of report: writing information and preparing a booklet

#what do you know about the sanctity of marriage?
#read the article below and write your own ideas about it.
What is the Sanctity of Marriage
The word sanctity refers to being holy, sacred, and saintly. So, marriage is a holy
or sacred thing considering the fact that a man and woman are living together after
marriage in a halal way. They are enjoying each other in the halal way, giving birth
to children with the recognition of their parents.
On the flip side, there are people who live together, have physical intimacy, and
give birth to children without knowing about his/her father. These couples are
doing the same thing, but without getting married, and making the relationship
halal.
Allah’s Pleasure
When the word sanctity or sacred or holy comes to a marriage, it automatically
connects the marriage bonding to Allah SWT. This refers to a relationship where a
man and a woman come together to fulfill their basic needs and objectives in a way
that pleases Allah SWT.
The above paragraph should clear the sanctity of marriage meaning to you.
Doing Each Other’s Duty for the Sake of Allah
When the husband feeds his wife and children thinking that Allah SWT made it
obligatory upon him to feed his family, the husband gets rewards for each action.
When the wife guards her modesty, takes care of the children, the wealth of
husband, and house keeping in mind that these are obligatory upon her from Allah
SWT, the wife gets rewards for these actions too.
Raising Kids
Both the individuals raise children as Allah-fearing and kind human beings.
They raise their kids according to the Quran and Sunnah to make sure whenever
the kids do any good deed, the parents get rewarded for that.
Why is the Sanctity of Marriage Important?
Marriage is the only relationship that was created up in heaven, and will end up in
heaven in the hereafter. A number of Quranic verses and hadiths that talk about the
afterlife in heaven, mention how a husband and wife will be living together. You
will hardly find any narration mentioning if a man will be searching for his parents
and child.
Whenever a Muslim man and woman get married after choosing the right life
partner, if they make their intention like this that Allah told people to get married
and Prophet Muhammad ‫ ﷺ‬got married, that is why I am getting married to
protect my chastity and private parts, then that person will be rewarded from the
marriage.
When they are married, they have duties to maintain towards each other. Not
fulfilling the duties will be considered as a sin, which includes not providing for
the family, disobeying the wife, not fulfilling the physical demand of each other,
and the list goes on.

138
So, from a religious point of view, marriage carries much weight.
When the Marriage is Only a Contract
People who do not take religion seriously often say that they do not validate
‘Sanctity of Marriage’ because their view of marriage is different.
According to them a couple can get married with some paperworks done as it is
only a matter of contract. If this is the only understanding of marriage to them,
then, that marriage will not be a sacred thing.
Although in such a marriage, there is commitment, there is betrayal as well. Setting
a moral ground to keep the commitment sounds weaker than the commitment of
people who get married only for Allah’s pleasure. They cannot cheat knowing the
fact that Allah is watching, and there will be consequences in both worldly life and
hereafter.
Do not get me wrong, people that are not religious, who do agree with the
‘Sanctity of Marriage’ thing, their married lives also last. But if you look at the
percentage of them getting divorced or cheating their spouses, this category of
people are much larger in numbers.
On the other hand, people who consider marriage as sanctity, their percentage of
cheating and getting divorced is quite low compared to the people who consider
marriage only as a contract and commitment.
There are also people who believe in Allah, but do not think marriage is sacred.
This group of people cheat and get divorced for one or multiple reasons more than
people who take marriage as a medium to please Allah SWT.
In summary, the sanctity of marriage between a man and a woman secures marital
bonding even better, and the commitment here is much stronger as doing anything
haram, the person has to hold accountability for him/herself to Allah SWT in the
hereafter.
Family is an Ideal Field of Practicing Islam
In Islam, there are some indirect forms of worships that cannot be done without
getting married. In the Quran, there is a verse telling people to protect their
families from the hellfire. This indicates doing dawah in the family so that
everyone can make it to the Jannah, the ultimate destination.
Raising children, paying for the family, teaching children how to make wudu, how
to read the Quran, how to pray, how to fast, there are many other rewarding acts
that one can do living with a family.
FAQs
What does the sanctity of marriage mean?
The sanctity of marriage definition refers to the sacred and holy marriage bonding
between a man and woman who get together in a common purpose of fulfilling
their needs the way Allah SWT allows. This marriage life also helps to attain
Allah’s pleasure in lots of ways.
What is the importance of marriage?
The first and foremost importance of marriage is to protect one’s chastity by not
engaging in sinful or haram acts.

139
Marriage is the beginning of a family that helps both the husband and wife to do
their responsibilities and duties towards each other.
Muslim couples help each other obeying Allah SWT and staying away from
forbidden things. Also, in a family, people can get reminders about religious
obligations.
Other than the religious stuff, marriage helps people to understand each other,
enduring patience, accepting the faults of others, and being a support for each other
during hardships and trials.
Why is it important to know the sanctity of nikah?
Muslim men and women get married to fulfill their basic as well as sexual needs
the way Allah SWT has permitted. Their creator is the reason why they got
married, and agreed upon the fact that they will not cheat each other, act
irresponsibly, and whatnot.
If a person does not understand the sanctity of nikah, then cheating or not keeping
the commitment will be a lot easier, especially in a world where adultery and
fornication are widespread.
Final Words
The sanctity of marriage will depend on how much the husband and wife are
devoted to Allah SWT. The better the connection with the Lord, the better the
married life goes, and sanctity remains as it was before. So, choosing the right
spouse is vital here.
Now, if someone asks you ‘what is sanctity of marriage?’; hopefully, you will be
able to make a good impression while explaining this matter.

How do we show respect to our elders?
In a seated environment, on seeing an elder walk inside, we stand up and if needed,
show him a place where he can sit; and wait for him to do so.
If the elder is someone of old age or vast knowledge, we show him respect by
kissing his hand.
We know that the priority of speech always belongs to our elders. We either talk
when they have finished talking or we ask permission to talk.
