Notes week 1 Bio

 Anatomy study of the parts of body. Physiology study of normal

functioning of body
 What is life?
 Obtain energy from organic molecules, atp gives us the energy for us to
do stuff receive atp by breaking down glucose
 Synthesize complex organic molecues. Nucleic acid .DNA
proteins .Hemoglobin found in red blood cells
 Reproduce- plants Asexually.
 Respond stimuli from environment- have to be able to change.
 Multicellular start off as a single cell
 Cell division- ability of a cell to divide into two cells. Cell growth in size.
Cell differentiation- cells specific structure and function
 Element- pure substance that cannot be broken down. Form building
blocks of all matter (living or non living). CHON- carbon hydrogen oxygen
nitrogen
 ATOM- smallest unit of a chemical element retain physical and chemical
properties. Made of subatomic particles. Subatomic particles have
electric charge in specific location of atom. Protons, neutrons, electrons.
 Electrons- negaivly charged, circle around nucleus.
 Atomic number is protons. Number of electrons is number of protons.
 Elements are stable when outer electron shell is full or contain 8
electrons
 Elements must gain or los eelectrons to obtain full ellectrons shell which
change electrical charge of elements
 Moleucles combinations of tow or more atoms can form a molecule. Link
from chemical bond
 Ionic bonds formed when tow atoms opposing charges are attracted and
transfer an electron to stable . Compounds form neutral compounds
 Covalent bond they share electrons with another atom instead of gaining
or loosing
 Unequal sharing of electrons= polar covalent
 Equal sharing of electrons= non polar covalent bond
 Inorganic without carbon. Organic contain carbon
 Water- consist of two hydrogen atoms covalently bonded to on oxygen
atom
 Presence of hydrogen bonds cause water to boil. Hydrogen causes high
surface tension.
 Water acts as a solvent. Involved in every reaction in our body. Water
maintains body temperature. Acts as a lubricant and cushion.
 66% of water is in intercellular fluids
 Glucose fructose galactose are 3 monosaccharides and contain 6 carbon
 Disacchardies have oxygen bonding- glycosidic bonds
 Lipids contain COH. A lot of carbon and hydrogen
 Fatty acids contain carboxylic acids with a hydrocarbon chain.
 Fatty acid contain maximum number if hydrogen. Can vary in length and
saturation level
