Subsonic Ramjet Thrust Analysis Report

The laboratory report details the analysis of a subsonic ramjet engine, highlighting its simplicity and inability to produce thrust at standstill. The experimental setup involves measuring various parameters such as air-fuel inputs, thrust, and drag using sensors while adjusting the inlet position. The procedure includes starting a radial fan, adjusting the inlet for measurements, and recording data for three different positions.

1 - Introduction
Ramjet engines are the simplest form of jet engines since they only consist of a diffusor to slow
down the incoming air, a burner to add thermal energy into the work fluid, and a nozzle to
accelerate the work fluid and produce useful thrust. This makes them favorable from a simplicity
point of view, but this comes at the cost of not being able to produce any thrust at a standstill,
since there is no rotating assembly to compress the air at zero flight velocity.

In this lab work, we will analyze a subsonic ramjet. We will collect information about air-fuel
inputs and measure the thrust generated. Later, we will observe the performance characteristics
of the test setup.

2 - Experimental Setup and Procedure

The experiment setup consists of a subsonic ramjet that can be seen in figure 1 where the
required airflow to sustain the operation is supplied by a radial fan. The ramjet is mounted on a
rail where the position of the inlet relative to radial fan exit can be adjusted. By this way, the
inlet airstream properties can be altered.

The inlet airstream velocity can be measured with the help of a pressure sensor, that
measures the dynamic pressure of the freestream air and gives out a reading in water pressure
head. Moreover, the inlet airstream total temperature, the fuel total temperature and the fuel total
pressure can all be measured with various sensors. Layout of these sensors can be seen in figure
2 Lastly, the installed thrust and drag force generated by the engine can be measured. Then, these
measured values can be corrected to estimate the actual values by the help of figure 3 and figure
4.
Procedure is as follows: First, the fan is started, and the adequate inlet conditions are reached.
Then, the inlet position is adjusted for the first measurement and the ramjet is started with an
igniter mechanism. After that, the total pressure and temperatures of the fuel, installed thrust and
drag, and lastly, the dynamic pressure of the inlet air stream are noted. Then, the position of the
inlet is adjusted further two more times to collect three data points.
