The 39th EDSA People power commemoration

Today marks a significant event in Philippine history- the EDSA People power revolution
anniversary. I came across a post from An Lantawan, an official name of Leyte Normal
University student publication, commemorating the 39th anniversary of this historic period.

The An Lantawan highlighted the “Sumala ha ira” or among the perspective of instructors
from social studies in the university answering the question “Why remembering the EDSA
people power revolution is crucial in making informed decisions for the upcoming elections.”
As I read their commentary or their answers on the question, I have agreed with the
sentiments expressed in the post, it highlights our democratic identity as a citizen being
threatened to express and defend our rights during that period. We also call out the attention
of the current administration to have a one-day break from work and classes on this day
February 25, 2025 Tuesday. As a tribute to honor the commemorative happenings from our
history during the Marcos regime and for the people who fought for their rights. As the
classes were still being pushed in Leyte Normal University and some universities moved for
cancelations of classes, we highly appreciated the efforts of our co-student and the people
behind this commemoration that we were still able to stand up and defend historical truths,
our collective efforts did not fail us to speak up for the things we know our right. Sir Lance
Cajarop one of the interviewees from social studies, he said that “EDSA people power
revolution reminds us that true power lies with the people and that our leaders must be held
to the highest moral, ethical, and competent standards.”

2025 Elections are fast approaching, we must demand good governance from seeking good
qualities among candidates. We are informed citizens until the next generations we must not
let history repeat itself, never again.
