CIV 451: Bridge Design
Maximum marks: 50 Time Alowed: 2.5Hrs.
Note:* Grade of material: Concrete M30, R/F steel Fe-415, and Structural steel Fe-250
unless otherwise spccificd.
Q. [Link] the members LaL4 and U:Ls of a Pratt-through-type truss bridge of span 8@ 4.5 m
=36 m, shown in Fig. 1. Consider the dead load (DL) as 50 kN/m per truss excluding WC.
The D.L due to WC is 7 kN/m per truss. Consider force due to line live load as 135 kN/m
per truss for 3.6 m length excluding impact effect. Use proper load combinations for the
ultimate limit state. The height of the truss is 4.5 m.

Q. 2. Design an [Link] slab for ultimate limit states only if the bridge has an effective span
of 7.0 m and has a total carriageway width of 7.5 m,including kerbsof 600 mm width. The
bridge is subjccted to class 70R. Track load. The thickness of [Link] 80 mm and the total
thickness of the slab is 500 mm. A clear cover of 40 mm is provided for the main
reinforcement. lgnore the effect of shear forces.

Q.3. Check the adequacy of the R.C.C slab culvert of S00 mm depth for serviceability limit state
(deflection and cracking) according to IRC 112 and IS 456. The bridge has an cffective span
of 6.0mand aservice moment of 190 [Link] cover of 40 mm is provided for the main
reinforcement of 2500 mm². Consider the provided bar diameter as 20 mm, modular ratio
8and humidity 50%. Assume other relevant data suitably.
(10) (CO3)
Q.4. Check the adequacy of an interior plate girder of a composite bridge having an effective span
of 25 mfor composite action only. The plate girder is composed of a web plateof size 1100
mm x 12 mm, and top & bottom flange plates of size 600 mm x 20 mm. The girders are
spaced at 2.20 c/c. The dead load on the girder due to slab etc., and w.c. is 20 kN/m and 5
kN/m, respectively. The bridge is subjected to I.R.C. Class-7OR track loading, and
diaphragms are placed at 5.0m c/c spacing. The thickness of the slab is 200 mm.

a) Why does lateral torsional buckling occur in Plate Girders?
b) What essential factors determine elastic critical moment (Mcr) for lateral torsional
buckling?
c) Consider an 8.50 m wide 2-lane Bridge with 7500 mm carriageway without
footpaths. The bridge consists of a 300-thick slab supported on 3 symmetrically
placed identicalsteel girders @3000 C/C of span 40 m. Check the adequacy of steel
girders for lateral stability (lateral-torsional buckling) for the girder alone and with the
deck slab. Take removable formwork load (decking sheet load) of 4 KN/m². The steel
girder comprises a web plate of size 2350 mm x 20 mm, top & bottom flanges of size
600x 45 mm.
