Network Design Document
Faculty of Computing, Bahir Dar University
Executive Summary
This document presents a comprehensive network design for the Faculty of Computing at
Bahir Dar University. The proposed hierarchical network architecture aims to improve
performance, scalability, security, and manageability. It includes detailed specifications for
hardware, software, topology, addressing, routing, and security mechanisms to support
academic and administrative services efficiently.
Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Organization Overview
The Faculty of Computing at Bahir Dar University provides undergraduate and graduate
programs in Computer Science, Information Technology, and Software Engineering. The
faculty hosts around 3,000 students, 120 academic staff, and 40 administrative staff,
offering a wide range of services including e-learning, digital libraries, research labs, and
administrative platforms.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The existing network infrastructure is outdated and does not support modern teaching
methods, high-speed data access, or secure online services. Frequent network outages, poor
scalability, and security vulnerabilities are common issues.
1.3 Objectives of the Project
1.3.1 General Objective
To design and implement a secure, scalable, and high-performance network for the Faculty
of Computing.
1.3.2 Specific Objectives
- Improve network speed and uptime
- Implement robust security measures
- Support VoIP, e-learning, and remote access
- Provide centralized management and monitoring
1.4 Significance of the Project
The network design will ensure efficient delivery of academic content, enhance research
capabilities, and improve administrative workflows.
1.5 Scope of the Project
The design covers academic buildings, administrative offices, computer labs, and server
rooms, including both wired and wireless networks. Constraints include budget limitations
and minimal disruption to ongoing services.
