Estimating Inbreeding Coefficients

Leia, a geneticist, calculates her inbreeding coefficient (FLeia) based on her family pedigree. She uses the formula for inbreeding coefficients, leading to the calculation of FK as 5/32 and FQ as 69/512, considering both inbred and normal loops in her family tree. The document details the step-by-step estimations for these coefficients.

Leia (shown with L) finds out that her parents were

related. As she is a geneticist, she immediately wants

to estimate the inbreeding coefficient for herself. If
this is Leia’s family pedigree, what would she find
as FLeia? Show all your estimations step by step.

Since the common ancestor for K is inbred, the formula we should use for FK is

F = (1/2)n [1 + FCA]
Where FCA is the inbreeding coefficient for the inbred common ancestor and n is the number of members
in the inbreeding loop.

Loop F has three members, therefore

FK = (1/2)3 [1 + FF]

FK = 1/8 [1 + 1/4] = 1/8 . 5/4 = 5/32

Now the last step is to estimate the Fq. There are two loops, loop K has an inbred common ancestor, loop
L is a normal one, each has four members. Therefore,

FQ = Floop K + Floop K

FQ = (1/2)4 [1 + FK] + (1/2)4

FQ = (1/2)4 [1 + 5/32] + (1/2)4

FQ = 1/16 . 37/32 + 1/16
FQ = 37/512 + 1/16
FQ = (37 + 32) / 512

FQ = 69/512
