READING COMPREHENSION
AFRICA: Rhythm of Traditions
(Read this on your book Language Literature by Nicolas M. Galvez Jr, Michael Angelo E.
Malicsi and Lourdes M. Ribo page 554. )

FACTS ABOUT AFRICA

A. Africa is considered to be the second largest continent in the world with a total
area of around 11 million square miles that account for 5.7% of the earth’s
surface as well as 20% of the total surface of land on our planet.

B. There are 54 countries as well as quite a few disputed territories. Sudan is

used to be the largest country in Africa until it was split into Sudan and South
Sudan. Algeria is now the largest African country by geographical area. Cairo is
the capital city of Egypt and is also the largest city.

SLAVERY IN AFRICA

C. Systems of servitude and slavery were common in parts of Africa in ancient

times, as they were in much of the rest of the ancient world. When the Arab slave
trade (which started in the 7 th century) and Atlantic slave trade (which started in
the 16th century) began, many of the pre-existing local African slave system began
supplying captives for slave markets outside Africa. Slavery in historical Africa was
practiced in many different forms: Debt slavery, enslavement of war captives,
military slavery, slavery for prostitutions, and criminal slavery were all practiced in
various parts of Africa.

ACTIVITY # 4 – UNDERSTANDING LITERATURE

After the three activities, we’ve learned something about the lifestyle of Africans and the
author behind the poem. In order for us to further learn about them let us all read and analyze
the poem “Africa” written by David Diop.

AFRICA
By: David Diop

I. Africa my Africa,
Africa of proud warriors
In ancestral savannas,
Africa of whom my grandmother sings
On the banks of the distant river
I have never known you
But your blood flows in my veins

II. Your beautiful black blood

That irrigates the field
The sweat of your work
The work of your slavery
The slavery of your children

III. Africa, tell me Africa,

Is this you, this back that is bent,
This back that breaks
Under the weight of humiliation
This back trembling with red scars
Saying yes to the whip
Under the midday sun?

IV. A grave voice answers me:

Impetuous son this tree, young and strong
This tree there, in splendid isolation
Amidst white and faded flowers,
That is Africa your Africa
That grows again, patiently, obstinately
As its fruit gradually acquires
The bitter taste of liberty.

Someday, Someday, Africa will rise. Patiently, obstinately, like a tree that starts
from a seed until it becomes a fully grown tree that bears fruit. That someday, in a field
of white flowers, will grow huge and strong. Being free from the vines that kept it and
free from all the things that has bothered it when it was still small and harmless.
Everyone starts from a seed until we grow to be a beautiful flower or a tree, but
there might be hardships along the way. But everyone like us deserves to feel the fresh
and free warm air that every plant desires, after the long way we took to achieve it.

Writers carefully select words to convey their ideas to their readers. Sometimes readers
will encounter words that they do not understand. They must then use different strategies to
figure out the meanings of unfamiliar words on their own.

PUT IT INTO CONTEXT!

How to hunt down the meaning of a word by using the clues around it.
What are Context Clues?
Context clues are hints found within a sentence, paragraph, or
passage that a reader can use to understand the meanings of new
or unfamiliar words.
These are hints that the author gives to help define a difficult or unusual word. The clue
may appear within the same sentence as the word to which it refers, or it may follow in a
preceding sentence.
Unknown word is defined immediately following its use: brief definition, synonym, or
restatement using punctuation, commas, parentheses or dashes.

What are the types of Context Clues?

1. Example – The use of example or explanation to clarify or explain an unknown word.
Examples that the reader may know to help explain a new and unfamiliar concept or
term. Note the punctuation clues: commas or hyphens and the Signal words—like, such
as, for example, for instance, including, to illustrate, specifically.

 Example#1: Many people have phobias, such as fear of heights, a fear of water, or a
fear of confined spaces.
(The unknown word in the sentence is the word PHOBIAS. There are examples of
phobias given in the sentence to easily understand it)
 Example#2: Celestial bodies, including the sun, moon, and stars, have fascinated
man through the centuries.

2. Definition– The meaning of the unknown word is given briefly after its use in the
sentence. Definitions are usually set off by commas or dashes, and may include the use
of words or phrases such as means, is, refers to and are called.
 Example#1: Lingerie, French for women’s underwear and sleepwear, are available in
attractive colors.
(In the first example, the unfamiliar word LINGERIE is followed by its definition)
 Example#2: His emaciation, that is, his skeleton-like appearance, was frightening to
see.
 Example#3: Apples, red fruits that grows on trees, are my teacher’s favorite.

3. Synonym– A writer often choose a more familiar word or words with the same meaning
to make the difficult word understandable.

 Example#1: John and Via have not spoken to each other for a year because of a
disagreement. The cause of their dissension was about money matters.

(The unknown word DISAGREEMENT is synonymous to the word DISSENSION)

 Example#2: Tony noticed that the wallabies at the zoo looked like kangaroos.
 Example#3: Ballet students appear so lithe; they are so limber and flexible.

4. Antonym – The unknown word is contrasted to a known word that is opposite or almost
opposite in meaning. Contrast clue words: but, however, in contrast to, on the other

4. Antonym – The unknown word is contrasted to a known word that is opposite or

almost opposite in meaning. Contrast clue words: but, however, in contrast to, on the
other hand

 Example#1: The gentleman was portly, but his wife was thin.
(The unknown word PORTLY (somewhat fat) has an opposite meaning to the word
THIN.)
 Example#2: While raptors are carnivorous, many birds subsist on seeds or other plant
parts.

WHY ARE CONTEXT CLUES IMPORTANT?

 They help us define unfamiliar and difficult words in context.
 They help us to become better and perceptive readers.
