🔁 Combined System – Genset (Generator Set):

A generator set (genset) includes:

 Engine (provides mechanical power)

 Generator/alternator (produces electricity)

Example: A diesel generator = Diesel engine + Alternator.

⚡ Generator:

 Function: Converts mechanical energy into electrical energy.

 Working Principle: Electromagnetic induction (rotation of rotor in stator).

 Output: Electricity (AC or DC).

 Needs an engine or turbine to rotate its shaft.

 Types: Synchronous generator (alternator), asynchronous generator, DC generator.

 Oil and gas companies use a wide range of industrial equipment depending on the stage
of the operation: Upstream (exploration & production), Midstream (transportation &
storage), and Downstream (refining & distribution).

Engine:

 Function: Converts chemical energy (fuel) into mechanical energy.

 Working Principle: Internal combustion (e.g., using diesel, petrol, gas).

 Output: Rotational mechanical energy (shaft power).

 Examples: Car engine, diesel engine, gas engine.

 Types: Diesel engine, petrol engine, gas engine (biogas, natural gas, etc.).

 🔷 Top Drive / Rotary Table: Rotates the drill string.

 Mud Pumps: Circulate drilling fluid.

 Blowout Preventer (BOP): Prevents uncontrolled fluid flow (blowouts).

 Derrick/Mast: Tower to support drilling equipment.

 Drill Pipes & Drill Bits: Penetrate geological formations.

🔶 2. Midstream: Transportation & Storage

🚛 Pipeline Equipment:

 Compressor Stations: Maintain gas pressure in pipelines.

 Pumps: Transport crude oil and liquids.

 Pigging Equipment: Clean and inspect pipelines.

 Valves & Flow Meters: Control and monitor flow.

🛢 Storage Facilities:

 Tanks (Fixed Roof / Floating Roof): Store crude oil and refined products.

 LNG Storage Tanks: For liquefied natural gas.

🧪 Well Logging & Testing Tools:

 Logging Tools: Measure rock properties (porosity, resistivity, etc.).

 Casing and Cementing Tools: Line the wellbore for protection.

 Wellhead Equipment: Controls pressure at the surface.

 Subsea Equipment: Used for offshore drilling (e.g., Christmas tree).

1. Upstream: Exploration and Production

Drilling Equipment:

 Drilling Rig: For drilling wells into the earth.

🔴 3. Downstream: Refining & Distribution

🏭 Refinery Equipment:

 Distillation Columns: Separate crude oil into products.

 Heat Exchangers: Transfer heat between fluids.

 Reactors (Hydrotreating, Catalytic Cracking): Modify hydrocarbons.

 Pumps & Compressors: Move fluids and gases.

 Control Valves & Actuators: Regulate process conditions.

⚡ Common Power & Utility Equipment (All stages):

 Gas & Diesel Generators: Backup or continuous power.

 Transformers / Switchgear: Electrical distribution.

 Air Compressors: For pneumatic systems.

 Cooling Towers / Boilers: Utility systems.

🧯 Safety Systems:

 Flare Systems: Burn off excess gases.

 Gas Detectors / Fire Suppression: For safety.

 SCADA Systems: Remote monitoring and control.
