Topic 5: Should colleges and universities require students to take
physical education classes?
In recent years, many colleges and universities have focused on the physical
health of students, and some educational institutions have organized physical
education classes as part of their curriculum. While some people agree that
physical education classes help students improve their health and develop a
healthy lifestyle, others argue that they are unnecessary. In my opinion, colleges
and universities should require students to take physical education classes
because of following reasons.
One of the primary reasons to support mandatory physical education classes is
their role in promoting physical health and fitness. Nowadays, students face
changes in their lifestyle, such as reduced physical activities, due to increasing
academic and life pressures. This lifestyle is becoming more common and can lead
to obesity, heart disease and many other health issues. Therefore, physical
education classes provide students with the opportunity to exercise and engaged
in physical activities regularly, that help them improve their health and establish a
healthy routine in life.
In addition, exercise has been shown to have a positive impact on mental health,
such as reducing stress, anxiety and depression. Many students in rural areas,
who want to pursue higher education, have to move to big cities to live and study.
As a result, they must adapt to their surroundings and their lives change
significantly in term of lifestyle and social relationships. Therefore, their college
life can be very stressful, and regular exercise through physical education classes
at school can help them reduce feelings of anxiety, sleep better and be more
focused on their studies.
Another reason is that organizing physical education classes promotes a
comprehensive education. University is not just about academic knowledge; it is
also a place for students to learn and develop other life skills. Therefore,
participating in sports activities requires students to set goals and expectations
for themselves and to manage their time effectively in order to balance physical
activities with their studies. On the other hand, some people think that the
academic pressure on students is very high, so physical education classes are
unnecessary, and instead, they could participate in specialized classes to enhance
their knowledge and professional skills.
In conclusion, although the academic pressure on students is increasing,
universities and colleges should still organize physical education classes as part of
the curriculum due to the above benefits. I think that physical education is
essential for promoting physical health, mental well-being, and developing life
skills that contribute to a comprehensive education.
