INTERNSHIP REPORT 2025

1. BASICS OF [Link]
1.1. Introduction
STAAD Pro is a structural analysis and design computer program
originally developed by Research Engineers International in CA. In late
2005, Research Engineer International was bought by Bentley Systems.
STAAD Pro features state of the art user interface, visualization tools,
powerful analysis and design engines with advanced finite element
(FEM) and dynamic analysis capabilities. From model generation,
analysis and design to visualization and result verification STAAD Pro is
the professional first choice. [Link] was developed by practicing
engineers around the globe. It has enveloped over 20 years and meets
the requirements of ISO 9001 certification.

2. GRIDS IN [Link]
The grid in [Link] represents the construction lines in X, Y, Z
coordinates which helps to create the geometry of the structure.
The origin of the grid is marked on the graphic, with a small circle.
The construction lines are used to specify how many gridlines are
created either side of the origin, the spacing between the gridlines.
2.1. Types of grids
Three different types of standard grid can be created:
a. Linear b. Radial c. Irregular

FIGURE: LINEAR GRID

FIGURE: RADIAL GRID

SIST CHISOPANI SOUTH SIKKIM

INTERNSHIP REPORT 2025

a. Linear Grid:
• Linear grid used to place the construction lines perpendicular to
one another along a “left to right- top to bottom” pattern, as in the
lines of chess board.
• Plane is defined as being coincident with the global XY, XZ or YZ
planes or at an angle skewed with respect to the global planes.
• Location of the origin can be defined with respect to global X, Y
and Z coordinates systems.
• The grid is the Default grid in [Link]

b. Radial Grid:
• Radial grid used to place construction lines to appear in a spider-
web style, which makes it is easy to create circular types models
where members are modeled as piece-wise linear straight lines
segments.
• Plane is defined as being coincident with the global XY, XZ, and
YZ planes or at angle skewed with respect to the global planes.
• Location of the origin can be defined with respect to global X, Y,
and Z coordinates systems.
• Well suited for drawing circular models using piece-wise linear
techniques.

c. Irregular Grid:
• Irregular grid used to create gridlines with unequal spacing that lie
on the global planes or on an inclined plane.
• Plane is defined as being coincident with the global XY, XZ or YZ
planes or at an angle skewed respect to the global planes.
• In this grid we can create regularity or irregularly spaced linear
construction lines.

3. TYPES OF SUPPORTS AND ITS REACTIONS

Support in a structure
is a member which
helps others members
to resist loads.
Supports in a structure
transfers the load to
the ground and
provides stability to the
structure supported on
it.
The supports can also
be called as joints or
constraints.
The supports hold the
structure in place, they
resist unwanted motion
and therefore create
reaction forces, which
is called as Support
reactions.

4. 2-D MODELLING IN STAAD Pro

The new [Link] CONNECT EDITION, simplify our BMI workflow by
using a physical model in [Link] that is automatically converted
into the analysis model for our structural analysis. Share synchronized
models with confidence for multi-discipline team collaboration and most
importantly, delivers safe, cost-effective designs.
Every firm has different needs, there are three flexible [Link]
options:
[Link] — The most basic STAAD option including FEM
analysis and physical modelling.
[Link] Advanced — Adds faster, more advanced and complex
analysis.
Structural Work Suite The most popular structural applications in a
single a cost-effective license.
Confidently design steel, concrete, timber, aluminium, and cold-
formed steel structures anywhere in the world using over 90
included international design codes, regardless of which STAAD
option you choose.
Automatically convert your physical model into an analytical model
to streamline your workflow. Improve multi-discipline team
collaboration through broad interoperability with Bentley desktop
and cloud and mobile applications like Open Buildings Designer,
Auto Pipe, Revit, and Tekla.
Optimize concrete and steel BIM workflows with the full integration
of physical members and surfaces.
Run many design alternatives in parallel with STAAD's cloud
services and view the results in clear, graphical side-by-side
comparisons.
Design for high-seismic regions or everyday conditions, using Finite
Element analysis.
View and edit models of any size from mobile devices.

5. ADVANCED TOOLS IN [Link]

5.1. The Structure Wizard
Opens when Geometry > Run Structure Wizard is selected in the
[Link] window. The structure wizard input method can still be used
for structures which don't conform exactly to the structures shown above.
In such cases it can be used to input the basic structure and then modified
by one of the other data entry methods. For example, a portal frame with
its apex off centre could be initially input as a symmetrical portal frame
using the structure wizard and then modified graphically by moving the
apex node to its correct location

6. CONCULSION
It can make use of various forms of analysis from the traditional static
analysis to more recent analysis methods like p-delta analysis,
geometric non-linear analysis, pushover analysis or a bucking analysis.
It can also make use of various forms of dynamic analysis methods from
time history to response spectrum analysis. The response spectrum
analysis feature is supported for both user defined spectrum as well as a
number of international codes specified spectra.
Additionally, [Link] is interoperable with applications such as RAM
Connection, Auto Pipe, SACS and many more engineering design and
analysis applications to further improve collaboration between the
different disciplines involved in a project. STTAD can be used for
analysis and design of all types of structural projects from plants,
buildings, and bridges to towers, tunnels, metro stations,
water/wastewater treatments plants and more.
