Subject: Science

Grade Level: Grade 7

Objective: Differentiate compounds and elements.

Learning across the curriculum:

1. Mathematics - Students can calculate the atomic mass of different elements.

2. History - Students can research the discovery and development of elements and
compounds.

3. Filipino - Students can create a poem or story related to elements and

compounds.

Elicit:

- Ask students if they know the difference between compounds and elements.

- Ask students to give examples of compounds and elements.

compound at element.
element.

Engage:

1. Show a video clip explaining the difference between compounds and elements.

2. Conduct a class discussion on the importance of compounds and elements in

everyday life.

3. Present a mystery box activity where students have to guess if the objects inside
are compounds or elements.

compound at element.
Explore:

Activity 1 - Sorting Compounds and Elements

Materials: Flashcards with names of compounds and elements, chart paper,

markers

Instructions: Divide the class into groups. Give each group a set of flashcards
with names of compounds and elements. Instruct them to sort the flashcards
into two categories: compounds and elements. They should write the names of
the compounds and elements on the chart paper under the respective
categories. Use the rubric below for grading.

Rubric:

- Correct categorization: 3 points

- Accurate labeling: 2 points

Assessment questions:

1. What is the difference between compounds and elements?

2. Give an example of a compound and an element.

Activity 2 - Element Models

Materials: Modeling clay, toothpicks, small cards with element symbols

Instructions: Provide each student with modeling clay and toothpicks. Give
them small cards with element symbols. Instruct them to create models of the
elements using the clay and toothpicks. They should label each model with the
correct element symbol. Use the rubric below for grading.

Rubric:

- Accurate representation of element: 3 points

- Correct labeling: 2 points

Assessment questions:

1. How can you differentiate an element from a compound?

2. Why is it important to know the properties of elements?

Activity 3 - Compound Formation

Materials: Small containers, various substances (salt, sugar, baking soda, etc.)

Instructions: Provide each group with small containers and various

substances. Instruct them to mix different substances together to form
compounds. They should observe and record any changes that occur. Use the
rubric below for grading.

Rubric:

- Successful compound formation: 3 points

- Accurate observation and recording: 2 points

Assessment questions:

1. What happens when substances combine to form compounds?

2. Give an example of a compound that can be formed from everyday substances.

Explain:

1. Conduct a mini-lecture explaining the characteristics and properties of compounds

and elements.

2. Show examples of chemical formulas and how they represent compounds and
elements.

element.
Elaborate:

1. Perform a demonstration of a chemical reaction to show how compounds can be

broken down into elements.

2. Conduct a group activity where students create a concept map showing the
relationship between compounds and elements.

element.

Evaluate:

1. Give a quiz on the characteristics and properties of compounds and elements.

2. Assign a project where students research and present examples of common

compounds and elements found in their daily lives.

Extend:

- Conduct a field trip to a laboratory or chemical plant to see compounds and

elements in action.

Assignment:

Research and write a short essay discussing the importance of compounds and
elements in various industries.
