Trafficking takes many forms, and in many cases, these forms overlap. For
instance, in 2022, 8 percent of victims of trafficking in North America were
subjected to both sexual and labor exploitation. It is important to understand
that victims are often exploited in multiple ways simultaneously, and traffickers
take advantage of various vulnerabilities, including poverty, lack of education,
and political instability. This further complicates identification, protection, and
prosecution efforts.

Emerging trends also reveal the increasing adaptability of traffickers. Southeast


Asia has seen a rise in trafficking for online scams, where youth and adults are
lured under false pretenses, often promised legitimate jobs, and are then forced
to engage in cyber fraud and other illicit online activities. These evolving tactics
underscore the growing role of digital technology in trafficking operations and
the need for robust prevention and enforcement strategies that span both the
digital and physical spheres. It’s like the worst internship ever, except you don’t
get to leave, and your boss has a machete (probably).

PROTOCOL TO PREVENT, SUPPRESS AND PUNISH TRAFFICKING IN


PERSONS
The adoption of the Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in
Persons, Especially Women and Children by the UN General Assembly in 2000
marked a pivotal moment in the global fight against human trafficking.
Recognizing the need for a comprehensive international legal framework, the
Protocol, which is part of the UN Convention against Transnational Organized
Crime, established a comprehensive international approach encompassing
prevention, prosecution, and victim protection.( Protocol to Prevent, Suppress
and Punish Trafficking in Persons Especially Women and Children,
supplementing the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized
Crime | OHCHR)
