D. Reading
I. Put the recycling stages in order: cardboard (1–4) and plastic bottles
(1–8). Then read the first three paragraphs of the text to see if you were
correct.
1. Recycling cardboard
a) Stage 4 Sold to a manufacturer for their own use to make
new paper products. (The material will be sold on for
further processing until it eventually reaches the end
customer: a manufacturer that needs the material to use
in its products.)
b) Stage 1 Taken to a mill (= a factory where one material or
substance is made). (Cardboard goes to a special mill,
where it is cleaned and then broken down to paper pulp.
This will be sold and used to make new paper products.)
c) Stage 3 Broken down into pulp (= a thick, soft, wet
substance made by crushing something).
d) Stage 2 Cleaned. (Other materials also have a value –
aluminium cans for example – and they go to plants for
another round of sorting and cleaning)
2. Recycling Plastic bottle
a) Stage 2 Separated according to type of plastic.
b) Stage 1 Taken to a recycling plant (= a large factory
where an industrial process happens).
c) Stage 4 Put into chemicals to get the labels off.
d) Stage 3 Washed and cleaned.
e) Stage 6 Put into a pool to separate the bits of bottle plastic
from the bits of lid plastic.
f) Stage 7 Melted with the same type of plastic to form
pellets (= small, round, hard pieces).
g) Stage 5 Chopped into tiny bits.
h) Stage 8 Sold to a manufacturer for their own use to make
new products.
II. Read the remaining part of the text and decide if these statements are
true (T) or false (F).
3. Recycling plastic always uses more energy than making plastic
for the first time. F
4. There is more plastic on the planet than steel and cement. F
5. Most plastic is collected and recycled. F
6. Ellen MacArthur thinks that most resources have a one - way
journey from being created to being thrown away. T
7. Ellen MacArthur thinks that there is no point using different
materials in packaging because no packaging can be easily
recycled. F
8. In the ‘zero waste’ movement people grow their own food
whenever possible, like in the old days. F
III. Choose the option (a or b) which has the same meaning as the
words/phrases (1–6)
1. To melt –
2.
IV. Match the verbs (1–8) with the phrases (a–h).
3.
EXERCISE 3: WRITING LESSON 4.5
Subject: Proposal to improve the company’s green footprint
Recommendation
Taking all the factors mentioned into account, there are a number of ways that we
can improve our green footprint, because it is clear that there is a lot of waste in the
company.
I would like to recommend that the first thing the company should do is carry out a
waste review of the whole organization to raise employee awareness of what types of
garbage are recyclable. It would be advisable to ensure we only use reusable pens
and and recycled paper in the company. In addition, we should recycle old
computers other devices, so we also need to look for a local business that does this.
Furthermore, I recommend that we review our purchasing policies to make sure
that all the products we buy are manufactured sustainably and do not contain any
toxic subtances. We should also donate unwanted office furniture to charities or
refurbish it so we can still use it.
Another area to consider is our energy supply. In my opinion, it would be advisable
to use other renewable energy supplies suach as wind or solar power.
In conclusion, we would recommend that we encourage our staffs to consider the
environment at all times starting from their use of paper, water, plastic and energy.
The most officient option would be to replace using plastic cups in drinks machines
with bring our own mugs and water bottles to work. It would be a good idea for
staff to leave their cars at home and use public transport.
