Brief description of the component (1/2)
Pin assignment
6-cylinder spark ignition engine (e.g. N52TU with MSV90 or N53, N54 with MSD87)
The DME control unit is air-cooled. The air in the electronics box is drawn in through a separate E-box fan.
The DME control unit is liquid-cooled. The DME control unit is connected to the cooling circuit.
Due to the high computer performance, this engine has 2 DME control units (DME master control unit and DME
slave control unit).

The Digital Engine Electronics (DME) is the computing and switching centre of the engine control system. Sensors on
the engine and vehicle deliver the input signals. The signals for activation of the actuators are calculated from the
input signals and the setpoint values determined in the DME control unit by means of a calculation model as well as
the stored characteristic maps. The DME control unit activates the actuators directly or via relays.
The Car Access System (CAS) wakes up the control unit via the wake-up line (terminal 15 wake-up line).
The after-run starts after terminal 15 OFF. The adaptation values are stored during the after-run. The DME control unit
sends a bus signal to signal that it is ready to assume the sleep mode. When all the control units involved have
indicated they are ready to assume the sleep mode, the central gateway module (ZGM) issues a bus signal and the
control units terminate communication 5 seconds later.
There are 2 sensors on the printed circuit board in the DME control unit: a temperature sensor and an ambient
pressure sensor. The temperature sensor provides thermal monitoring of the components in the DME control unit. The
ambient pressure is required for calculation of the mixture composition.
One DME control unit is used for each bank of cylinders. Both control units are identical in design and have the same
programming status. However, the two control units are divided into a DME master controller and a DME slave control
unit using pin coding (DME and DME2 control unit). Communication between the control units takes place across the
FlexRay.
The master control unit (cylinder bank 1-6) receives the input signals from the sensor system on the engine, whereby
only one of these is present (e.g. accelerator pedal module, oil condition sensor, engine-oil pressure switch, coolant-
temperature sensor on the cooler outlet). The DME master control unit forwards these input signals across the
FlexRay to the DME slave control unit. All other input signals are transferred directly to the control unit responsible for
each cylinder bank. The signal from the crankshaft sensor is transmitted simultaneously to both control units.
Output signals that refer not only to one cylinder bank (e.g. electric fuel pump or exhaust flap) are sent by the master
control unit to the corresponding actuators.
Whereas both control units read and process the messages from the FlexRay, only the master control unit enters into
active communication with other control units, e.g. with the EGS control unit (EGS stands for “Electronic Gearbox
Control”).
If the DME2 control unit (DME slave control unit) fails, emergency operation of the engine via the DME control unit is
possible.
If the DME control unit (DME master control unit) fails, emergency operation of the engine is not possible.

The DME control unit is a bus user on the FlexRay, PT-CAN, PT-CAN2, LIN bus and body bus.
The DME control unit is connected to the intelligent battery sensor and the active air-flap control via the LIN bus.
The DME control unit is connected to the alternator and oil condition sensor via the bit-serial data interface (BSD). On
the 6-cylinder spark ignition engine, the electric coolant pump is also connected to the bit-serial data interface.

The body bus is used to transmit the enable signal for the engine start from the DME to the CAS (Car Access System).
The DME control unit is supplied with terminal 30B via the rear power distribution box. Terminal 30B is activated by
the CAS.

Notice!
For the first time, the hardware can be used both for the Digital Motor Electronics and for the Digital Diesel
Electronics.
New contacts, the so-called Nano MQS, are being used in the control unit. This means that new adapter
cables are necessary for the diagnosis.
The DME control unit supplies sensors and actuators directly with electrical power.
The 6 plug connections between the wiring harness and DME are watertight when their plugs are connected.
Description of operation
The Digital Engine Electronics (DME) is the computing and switching center of the engine control system. Sensors on
the engine and vehicle provide the input signals. The signals for activation of the actuators are calculated from the
input signals and the setpoint values determined in the DME control unit by means of a calculation model as well as
the stored characteristic maps. The DME control unit activates the actuators directly or via relays.
The DME control unit is woken up by the Body Domain Controller (BDC) via the wake-up line (terminal 15 wake-up).
The vehicle conditions Park/Residing/Driving are stipulated by the Body Domain Controller (BDC). The coastdown
begins when the condition changes to Park. The adaptation values are stored during the coastdown. The DME control
unit sends a bus signal to signal that it is ready to assume the sleep mode. If all involved control units have signaled
their readiness to "go to sleep", the BDC control unit outputs a bus signal and the control units end their
communications.
