DEPARTMENT OF APPLIED MECHANICS

Course: AML152 Engineering Mechanics

Assignment # 09 (S2025)
Date: 26/04/2025
Instructions:
1. Submit the assignments on plain A4 sized paper, leave sufficient margins on all sides of the paper.
2. Weightage will be given to neat presentation.
3. Illustrate your answers with neat figures, necessary formulas should be clearly mentioned and all answers should have units.
4. This Assignment if for practice, requires no submission.

1 A cast iron cantilever of length 1.5 m fails when a point load W is applied at the free end. If the [2]
section of the beam is 40 mm X 60 mm and the stress at failure is 120 N/mm2, find the point load
applied.

2 A simply supported rectangular beam carries two concentrated forces as shown in Fig. 1. The [2]
permissible stress for beam material in tension as well as compression is 180 MPa. Determine the
minimum dimensions of the beam cross section required if depth of beam needs to be 1.75 times
the width of beam.

3 A bending moment of 15 kNm and a shear force of 20 kN acts on a beam cross section as shown in Fig. [5]
2. Draw the bending stress distribution and shear stress distribution.

4 A beam is of square section of side 100 mm. If the permissible bending stress is 125 N/mm2. Find [5]
the moment of resistance when the beam section is placed such that (i) two sides are horizontal, (ii)
one diagonal is vertical. Find also the moment of resistance of the section in the two positions and
comment in which position the beam is stronger.

5 A rectangular beam is simply supported at the ends and carries point load at the centre. Prove that [3]
the ratio of span to depth = Maximum bending stress⁄(2 × Maximum shear stress)

6 The shear force and bending moment diagrams for a beam are shown in Fig. 3. If total length of the [3]
beam is 9 m, find bending stress distribution at a distance 4.7 m from the left end and shear stress
distribution at a distance 1 m from the right end. Take 𝑀𝑀max = 16.3 kNm.
