II. Fill in the blanks by choosing the appropriate word from those given in the bracket
(Osmotic Pressure, atmospheric pressure)
4. Isotonic solution have the same ------.
5. Low concentration of oxygen in the blood and tissues of people living at high altitude is due to low
------.
PART B
III. Answer any 2 of the following 2x2=4 Marks
6. State Henry’s law. Calculate the solubility of CO2 in water at 298K under 760mm Hg.
(KH for CO2 in water at 298K is 1.25*106 mm Hg)
7. What type of deviation from Raoults law is observed by mixing chloroform and acetone? Why
is a decrease in a vapour pressure observed in mixing chloroform and acetone?
8. Predict the state of the solute in the solution in the following situations.
(a) When ‘i’ is found to be more than one.
(b) When ‘i’ is found to be less than one.
9. Colligative properties help in determining the molar masses of the solutes. The method based
on which colligative property is preferred over others for determining molar masses of
Biomolecules and why?
PART C
IV. Answer any 2 of the following 3x2=6 Marks
10. Give reasons:
(a) Measurement of Osmotic pressure method is preferred for the determination of
molar masses of macromolecules such as proteins and polymers.
(b) Aquatic animals are more comfortable in cold water than in warm
water. (c) Elevation of boiling point of 1M KCl solution is nearly double than
that of 1M sugar solution.
11. An antifreeze solution is prepared by dissolving 31g of ethylene glycol(Molar mass=60g) in
600g of water. Calculate the freezing point of the solution.
(Kf for water =1.86 Kkgmol-1)
12. Calculate the boiling point elevation for a solution prepared by adding 10g of CaCl2 to 200g
of water.
( Kb for water = 0.52 Kkgmol-1)
13. A 0.01m aqueous solution of AlCl3 freezes at -0.068 oC. Calculate the percentage of
dissociation.
(Kf for water =1.86 Kkgmol-1).
PART D
V. Answer any 1 of the following 2x5=10
Marks
14. a) The vapour pressure of pure water at a certain temperature is 23.80 mm Hg. If 1 mole of a
non-volatile, non-electrolytic solute is dissolved in 100g water, calculate the resultant vapour
pressure of the solution.
