Class 9 Science – Chapter 1 Test
Chapter: Matter in Our Surroundings
Total Marks: 25
Difficulty Level: Moderate to High
Section A — 3 Marks Each (5 Questions)
1. Explain the key postulates of the kinetic theory of matter and describe how it explains
the behavior of solids, liquids, and gases.
2. How does evaporation cause cooling? Explain with examples from daily life.
3. Define latent heat. Differentiate between latent heat of fusion and latent heat of
vaporization with suitable examples.
4. Describe how pressure and temperature together can bring about a change in the state
of matter, such as converting a gas into a liquid.
5. Discuss an experiment that shows diffusion in gases. What does this experiment tell us
about the nature of particles?
Section B — 2 Marks Each (3 Questions)
6. State two reasons why gases are easily compressible but solids are not.
7. What is meant by melting point and boiling point? Give one example for each.
8. Why does a desert cooler cool better on a hot dry day compared to a humid day?
Section C — 4 Marks (Case Study-Based Question)
Read the following passage and answer the questions below:
In a laboratory, a student heats a beaker of ice. As the ice melts, the temperature remains at
0°C for some time. After complete melting, the water heats up until it reaches 100°C, where
boiling starts, but the temperature again stays constant. Meanwhile, the student notices that
some steam cools down and turns back into water on the cooler surface nearby.
9. Name and explain the two phase changes observed in this experiment.
10. Why does the temperature remain constant during these phase changes despite
continuous heating?
11. Identify the process that caused the steam to turn back into water.
12. How does the concept of latent heat apply to both melting and boiling in this case?
