Description:
The “Plastic Ban Awareness” initiative was organized by students of Vemana Institute of
Technology under the Vidvath India Foundation (R) in selected villages of Arakere Grama
Panchayathi and Singanayakanahalli Grama Panchayathi. The campaign aimed to raise
awareness about the harmful effects of plastic waste and promote the use of sustainable
alternatives in rural areas. Though rural regions generate less plastic waste compared to urban
areas, the lack of waste segregation and disposal mechanisms poses serious environmental and
health risks.
The outreach was carried out in villages such as Arakere, Byrapura, Budamaranahalli,
Chokkanahalli, Kakkehalli, Nellukunte, Kadatanamale, Suradenapura, Marasandra,
Singanayakanahalli, Avalahalli, Honnenahalli, Dibburu, Madappanahalli, and Mailappanahalli.

Activities included door-to-door visits, community meetings, poster and pamphlet distribution,
and workshops on alternatives like cloth bags. Students also led clean-up drives and engaged
schoolchildren to ensure long-term behavioural change.
Innovative methods like street plays, storytelling, and QR codes linked to awareness videos
made the campaign more interactive. A “Plastic-Free Village” competition encouraged
participation from entire communities. Surveys were conducted to understand local usage
patterns and their openness to biodegradable options. One major challenge was resistance from
shopkeepers due to cost concerns, which was addressed by suggesting affordable alternatives and
connecting them with eco-friendly suppliers.
The campaign emphasized sustainable practices like “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle,” and encouraged
collaboration with local authorities. It also highlighted the importance of educating children,
supporting vendors in switching to alternatives, and establishing basic waste management
systems. Feedback from villagers was positive, especially towards interactive sessions, and many
showed willingness to shift to eco-friendly products if made accessible.
This outreach initiative laid the groundwork for longer-term change by sparking environmental
responsibility and encouraging sustainable living practices in rural communities. Further

Sustainable development practices formed a core part of the initiative. Villagers were
encouraged to use biodegradable waste for composting, reducing the burden on dumping
grounds and enhancing soil quality. Efforts were also made to reduce plastic usage by
conducting workshops and promoting reusable alternatives. Educational sessions on hand
hygiene, clean toilets, and sanitation habits were conducted, especially among school children, to
instill long-term behavioral change.
Innovative methods like visual demonstrations, interactive activities with students, and
distribution of eco-friendly dustbins in key locations enhanced community involvement. Surveys
were conducted to assess current waste disposal habits, and the findings helped tailor the
awareness messages more effectively. The students also studied successful waste management
models from other rural regions to replicate feasible practices.
Through this program, the students gained valuable insights into rural sanitation challenges, the
