Relations and Functions – Definitions, Graphs, Domain, and Range

Linear Function
• Definition: A function of the form f(x) = mx + c, where m and c are constants.

• Example: f(x) = 2x + 3

• Domain: (-∞, ∞)

• Range: (-∞, ∞)

Quadratic Function
• Definition: A function of the form f(x) = ax² + bx + c, where a, b, and c are constants.

• Example: f(x) = x²

• Domain: (-∞, ∞)

• Range: [0, ∞)

Cubic Function
• Definition: A function of the form f(x) = ax³ + bx² + cx + d.

• Example: f(x) = x³

• Domain: (-∞, ∞)

• Range: (-∞, ∞)

Exponential Function
• Definition: A function of the form f(x) = a^x, where a > 0 and a ≠ 1.

• Example: f(x) = 2^x

• Domain: (-∞, ∞)

• Range: (0, ∞)

Reciprocal Function
• Definition: A function of the form f(x) = 1/x.

• Example: f(x) = 1/x

• Domain: (-∞, 0) ∪ (0, ∞)

• Range: (-∞, 0) ∪ (0, ∞)

Physics Assignment

1. Give any two limitations of dimensional method

• It cannot determine dimensionless constants in equations.

• It is not applicable for equations involving trigonometric, logarithmic, or exponential

functions.

2. The dimension of K in the equation W = 1/2 K x² is

Answer: [M T⁻²]

Explanation: Work W has dimension M L² T⁻², and x² has L², so K has dimension (M L²
T⁻²) / L² = M T⁻².

3. The velocity of a particle (v) at an instant t is given by v = a t + b t². The

dimension of b is
Answer: L T⁻³

Explanation: Velocity dimension is L T⁻¹. For term b t² to match, [b] T² = L T⁻¹ → [b] = L T⁻³.

4. What is the order of magnitude of the radius of cross section of wire having
radius of cross section as 0.225 cm?
Answer: 10⁻¹ cm

Explanation: 0.225 cm ≈ 2.25 × 10⁻¹ cm, so the order of magnitude is 10⁻¹ cm.
