1. Elaborate on the philosophy and principles of the Limit State Method


of RCC design.
2. Write brief notes on:
i) Partial safety factor for loads.
ii) Partial safety factor for materials.
iii) Characteristic loads.
iv) Characteristic strength.
3. Derive from fundamentals the expression for the area of stress block 0.36 fckbXu.
4. Explain the factors affecting long-term and short-term deflection.
5. A simply supported beam of rectangular section 200 mm X 450 mm overall is
reinforced with 3# - 16 mm diameter, having an effective span of 5 m. The beam
supports a load of 10 kN/m. Determine the short- and long-term deflection using M20
grade concrete and Fe - 415 grade steel.
6. A rectangular simply supported beam of span 5 m is 300 mm X 650 mm in cross-section
and is reinforced with 3 bars of 20 mm on the tension side at an effective cover of 50
mm. Determine the short-term deflection due to an imposed working load of 20 kN/m,
(excluding self-weight).
Assume the grade of concrete M20 and the grade of steel Fe - 415.
7. A singly reinforced beam 250 mm X 500 mm in section is reinforced with 4 bars of 16
mm diameter with an effective cover of 50 mm. The effective span of the beam is 6 m.
Assuming M20 grade concrete and Fe – 250 grade steel, determine the central
concentrated load “P” that can be carried by the beam in addition to its self-weight.
8. Determine the moment of resistance of the beam having the following data.
i) Size of the beam = 300 mm X 550 mm.
ii) Effective cover = 50 mm.
iii) Tension reinforcement = 2500 mm2.
iv) Compression reinforcement = 500 mm2.
Use M25 grade concrete and Fe–500 grade steel.
9. Enumerate step by step procedure to determine short term and long-term deflection.

13. A rectangular simply supported beam of span 5 m is 300 mm X 650 mm in cross-
section. It carries a total load of 30 kN/m over its entire span, out of which 10 kN/m is
the live load. The beam is reinforced with 3 bars of 20 mm on the tension side at an
effective cover of 50 mm. Determine the deflection at the central span due to shrinkage
and creep, if ultimate shrinkage strain = 0.0003 and creep co-efficient = 1.6.
14. A T–beam section has the following data:
i) Effective width of flange = 1600 mm
ii) Thickness of flange = 120 mm
iii) Width of rib = 300 mm
iv) Effective depth = 600 mm
The main reinforcement consists of 8 bars of 20 mm. The grades of concrete and steel used are
M20 and Fe-415 respectively. Determine the short-term maximum deflection, if it is subjected
to a total service load of 40 kN/m, when used as a simply supported beam of span 6 m.
15. A RCC beam of section 300 mm X 500 mm is reinforced with 4 bars of 16 mm diameter
with an effective cover of 50 mm. The beam is simply supported for 5 m. Determine
the maximum permissible UDL on the beam. Use M20 grade of concrete and Fe - 500
grade of steel.
16. Determine the ultimate moment capacity of a doubly reinforced beam having a width
of 300 mm and an overall depth of 600 mm, reinforced with 6 bars of 16 mm on the
compression side and 6 bars of 20 mm on the tension side. The effective cover is 50
mm on both sides. Use concrete of grade M20 and steel of grade Fe - 415.
17. Design a reinforced concrete beam of the rectangular section using the following data:
i) Effective span = 5 m,
ii) Width of beam = 250 mm,
iii) Overall depth = 500 mm,
iv) Live load = 37 kN/m,
v) Effective cover = 50 mm,
Materials: M-20 grade concrete & Fe-415 HYSD bars.
18. Design a cantilever beam having 1.1 m projection. The live load on the beam is 6 kN/m.
Use M25 grade concrete and Fe 415 grade steel for the design.
19. Design a singly reinforced SSB of clear span 5 m to support a working live load of 25
kN/m run. Use M20 grade concrete and Fe 415 grade steel. Assume the support
thickness is 230 mm.
20. Determine the amount of steel required for a rectangular section 300 mm X 600 mm to
support a load of 80 kN/m with an effective span of 6 m and an effective cover of 40
mm. Adopt M20 grade concrete and Fe 415 grade steel.
21. Design a continuous rectangular beam of span 7 m to carry a dead load of 12 kN/m and
a live load of 16 kN/m. The beam is continuous over more than 3 spans and is supported
by columns. Use M20 grade concrete and Fe 415 grade steel.
22. The portico of the guest house building consists of cantilever beams of an effective span
of 3 m, spaced at 2.5 m centre to centre. The beam supports a 120 mm thick slab. The
live load on the slab is 1.5 kN/m2. Using a concrete mix of M20 and steel Fe 415, design
an intermediate beam if the slab is flush with the top of the beams.
23. An isolated T beam has a flange of 2400 mm wide and 120 mm deep. The effective
width and depth of the web are 300 mm and 580 mm respectively. The tension
reinforcement consists of 8 bars of 20 mm diameter. The effective span of the simply
supported T beam is 3.6 m. Determine the MOR of the beam. The grades of concrete
and steel are M20 and Fe 415 respectively.
24. A T–beam R.C. floor system consists of a 120 mm thick slab supported by beams at 3
m centre to centre. The effective width and depth of the web is 300 mm X 580 mm. The
main reinforcement consists of 8 bars of 20 mm diameter. The grades of concrete and
steel used are M20 and Fe 415 respectively. Determine the moment of resistance of the
T – beam, if it is used as a simply supported beam of span 3.6 m.
25. Design an open well-type stair for a college building using the following data:
Floor to floor height = 3.60 m
No. of flights per floor = 3
Size of steps = 150 mm rise and 300 mm tread
Landings are supported all around by walls and by beams of width 300 mm at floor
level.
The thickness of the wall = 300 mm.
Use M20 grade concrete and Fe 415 grade steel.
26. Design a circular column of diameter 400 mm with helical reinforcement subjected to
a working load of 1200 kN. Use M25 grade concrete and Fe 415 grade steel. The
column has an unsupported length of 3 m and is effectively held in position at both
ends, but not restrained against rotation
27. A rectangular column 400 mm X 400 mm carries a live load of 2000 kN. The safe
bearing capacity of the soil is 150 kN/m2. Using M20 grade concrete and Fe 415 grade
steel, design a rectangular footing to support the column. Sketch the details of
reinforcement.
28. Design the reinforcement for a short axially loaded square column of size 400 mm x
400 mm to support a load of 1000 kN. Use M20 concrete and Fe 415 steel.
29. A column of size 300 mm x 400 mm has an effective length of 3.6 m and is subjected
to Pu = 1100 KN and Mu = 150 KN-m about the major axis. Design the column using
M25 concrete and Fe 415 steel, providing the steel.
30. Design a dog-legged staircase for an office building in a room measuring 2.8 m X 5.8
m clear. The vertical distance between the floors is 3.6 m. The width of the flight is to
be 1.25 m. Allow a live load of 3 kN/m2. Sketch the details of reinforcement. Use M20
concrete and Fe 415 grade steel. Assume the stairs are supported on 230 mm walls at
the end of the outer edges of the landing slabs.
