NARRATIVE TEXT

Narrative text is a text that tells a story.


The purpose/communicative approach/social function/goal/ aim of narrative text is to
entertain the listener/reader/viewer by presenting a series of events.
The schematic structure/generic structure of narrative text is:
1. Orientation (It is the opening part of a narrative text story. This part introduces the characters
in the story (characters) and the setting of the story which includes the setting of place, time,
atmosphere, and social conditions (setting)).
2. Complication (This section contains the problems that occur in a story. In more detail,
complications are divided into 3 parts, namely:
a. Rising action: Problems start to emerge
b. Climax: The peak of the problem
c. Falling action: The tension of the problem begins to decrease, and a resolution begins to be
found.)
3. Resolution (This section contains the resolution or ending of a narrative text story. A story can
be closed with a happy ending, a sad ending, or a cliffhanger)
4. Re-orientation (The last part of the narrative text structure usually contains a conclusion,
moral message (moral value), or a change in character at the end of the story. This reorientation
is optional because it does not always have to be present in a narrative text.)
Language Features of Narrative Text (Language Rules of Narrative Text)
1. Using Simple Past Tense (was, were, lived, walked, etc.)
2. Using Adverbs of Time (a year ago, an early morning, one time, etc.)
3. Using Adjectives
4. Using Noun Phrase

Type of narrative text


1. Fairy tales (a short story that is part of folklore and features magic, enchantments, and mythical
beings)
2. Mysteries (a genre of fiction, a word that describes something that is unexplained)
3. Science fiction (a literary and cinematic genre that explores the impact of science and technology
on society and individuals)
4. Romance (a romantic story between two people)
5. Horror Stories (a fictional tale that aims to create a feeling of fear, shock, or repulsion in the
reader.)
6. Adventure stories (a type of fiction that involves a courageous hero who goes on an epic journey
to achieve a goa)
7. Fables (animal’s story)
8. Folklore (Myth, legend, Folktale)
Example of Narrative Text
The Legend of Mount Batur Title
A long time ago, there lived on the island of Bali a giant-like creature Orientation
named Kebo Iwo. The people of Bali used to say that Kebo Iwo was
everything, a destroyer as well as a creator. He was satisfied with the meal,
but this meant for the Balinese people enough food for a thousand men.
Difficulties arose when for the first time the barns were almost empty Complication
and the new harvest was still a long way off. This made Kebo Iwo wild with
great anger. In his hunger, he destroyed all of the houses and even the
temples. It made the Balinese turn to rage.
So, they came together to plan steps to oppose this powerful giant by
using his stupidity. They asked Kebo Iwo to build them a very deep well, and
rebuild all the houses and temples he had destroyed. After they fed Kebo Iwo,
he began to dig a deep hole. hole boiling. Kebo Iwo was buried alive. Then the
water in the well rose higher and higher until at last it overflowed and
formed Lake Batur. The mound of earth dug from the well by Kebo Iwo is
known as Mount Batur.
One day he had eaten too much, he fell asleep in the hole. The oldest man Resolution
in the village gave a sign, and the villagers began to throw the limestone they
had collected before into the hole. The limestone made the water inside the
